What is Elestat?
Prescription Elestat is an eye medication that reduces irritation, inflammation, and itching caused by allergic reactions to the eye. The active ingredient in Elestat, epinastine HCI ophthalmic solution, is an antihistamine that works by blocking histamine, a naturally occurring chemical released by the body in response to allergens and stress that causes inflammation. Elestat is not intended to treat eye irritation caused by contact lenses.
How do I take Elestat?
Before applying Elestat into the eye, ensure that you remove contact lenses and wash hands thoroughly to avoid cross contamination. Tilt your head back, and apply one drop in each eye twice a day, or as prescribed by your doctor. Avoid touching the tip of the eyedropper or letting it touch your eye. After instilling a drop, hold your eye shut for several seconds while you press the corner of your eye nearest your nose with your finger to prevent the medicine from escaping through the tear duct.
Before taking Elestat, tell your doctor if:
- You wear contact lenses
- You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
- You ere breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
What are the possible side effects of taking Elestat?
Side effects of taking Elestat include eye burning sensation, swelling, infection, hyperemia, itching, cold, headache, sinusitis, cough, and sore throat. Tell your doctor right away if you experience any serious side effects.
What if I forget to take a dose of Elestat?
If you forget to take a dose of Elestat, apply the drops as soon as you remember. It is important to not apply more medication that is prescribed by your doctor.
How do I store Elestat?
Store the Elestat medication dropper in a room with a temperature between 59 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit out of reach from children.
What happens if I overdose on Elestat?
If you apply more Elestat than intended, simply rinse the eye out with cool water. If you accidently ingest the medicated drops, call Poison Control at 1 (800) 222-1222.
