What is Pred Forte?
Pred Forte is a brand name of the corticosteroid prednisolone in an ophthalmic solution that is prescribed to prevent permanent eye damage as well as to treat swelling and redness of the eyes caused by allergies, surgery, infection, injury, chemicals, or other conditions. It works by preventing substances that cause inflammation from being released into the body.
How do I take Pred Forte?
Pred Forte is instilled in the eyes, using an eyedropper, according to a schedule determined by the doctor. Before using, hands should be washed. Thoroughly shake the container before removing the top. To instill, tilt your head back, and gently pull down the lower eyelid. While looking away from the dropper, squeeze out a drop of the liquid so it falls on the lower eyelid. Close the eye and gently press against the inside of the eye so the medication does not escape down the tear duct. If you have been instructed to instill more than one drop, wait five minutes before the next drop. If you are not accustomed to using eye drop medications, ask your healthcare provider to instruct you in its use.
Before taking Pred Forte, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to prednisolone or any of the ingredients in the Pred Forte solution
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have glaucoma
- You have had cataract surgery
- You have herpes
- You have diabetes
What are the possible side effects of taking Pred Forte?
Some individuals have reported Pred Forte drug side effects after use. Less severe side effects include temporary stinging or burning in the eye or temporarily blurred vision. If any of these conditions persist, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing) or pain in the eye(s).
What if I forget to take a dose of Pred Forte?
If you forget to take the scheduled dose of Pred Forte, do so as soon as you remember and are able. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, forego the one missed and return to the regular regimen. Do not instill more drops than the prescription calls for to compensate for a missed application.
How do I store Pred Forte?
Keep Pred Forte tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children, and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow this medication to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired amount according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Pred Forte?
If too much of the Pred Forte drug is instilled, or if it is accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or has lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Pred Forte is for topical application only; do not drink the solution. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Pred Forte. Do not use this medication while wearing contact lenses. Do not allow the dropper to touch any surface. Do not suddenly stop using this medication after long-term use without a doctor’s permission. Pred Forte may cause temporary blurring of your vision; do not drive until its effects have cleared up.
Brand Names
Pred Forte is the brand name of an ophthalmic solution containing prednisolone, a corticosteroid. This medication has also been marketed under the brand names Prednisol, Econopred Plus, Omnipred, Pred Mild, and Prednisol; however, some of these brands may have been discontinued. Patients should not substitute one brand for another without the written permission of their doctors.
