What is Follistim AQ?
Follistim AQ is a manufactured version of the naturally occurring follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). It is prescribed to treat infertility in women who do not have ovarian failure but cannot ovulate. It works by regulating the egg growth and development and stimulating ovulation. Follistim AQ is also prescribed to men in order to increase sperm production. Follistim is not effective in women with primary ovarian failure or men with primary testicular failure.
How do I take Follistim AQ?
Follistim Aq is administered through injection; women may receive the injection either below the skin or into the muscle; men receive only a subcutaneous injection. This medication may be administered either in a physician’s office or at home; if injecting it at home, have your healthcare provider demonstrate the proper procedure. The strength and frequency of dosage will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s medical profile. Do not inject Follistim Aq if it is cloudy or there are particles in it. Do not take more or less of this drug without your doctor’s permission.
Before taking Follistim AQ, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to follicle stimulation hormone, neomycin, streptomycin, or any of the ingredients in Follistim Aq
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have, or have had, unusual vaginal bleeding, an ovarian cyst, polycystic ovary disease, or ovarian cancer
- You have, or have had, testicular cancer
- You have, or have had, heart problems, blood clots, or a stroke
- You have, or have had, a pituitary, thyroid, or adrenal gland condition or disorder
- You have, or have had, breast or uterine cancer or cancer of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus
- You have, or have had, asthma.
What are the possible side effects of taking Follistim AQ?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Follistim Aq. Less severe symptoms include acne, swollen or tender breasts, headache; a mild rash, nausea, pelvic, or stomach pain; pelvic tenderness or discomfort; redness, bruising, or pain at the injection site; stuffy or runny nose; sore throat; mild general tingling or numbing. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for assistance.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing), shortness of breath, nausea, severe pain in lower stomach, vomiting, bloating, urinating less frequently, diarrhea; warmth, swelling, pain, or redness in the legs, arms, or hands, weight gain, sudden weakness or numbness; severe pelvic pain.
What if I forget to take a dose of Follistim AQ?
If you forget the scheduled injection of Follistim Aq, contact your doctor.
How do I store Follistim AQ?
Follistim Aq may be stored either at room temperature or in a refrigerator. Do not freeze; make note of the varying expiration dates. Do not use this drug if it is cloudy or there are particles in the solution. Dispose of any unused or expired amounts according to the instructions of your pharmacist. Dispose of needles or injection pens in a proper medical waste disposal unit.
What happens if I overdose on Follistim AQ?
If an overdose of Follistim Aq is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Do not use Follistim AQ if you are pregnant; contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during the course of treatment. This drug may increase the chances of multiple births. Follistim Aq may cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), a potentially life threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention.
