Fycompa Information:

What is Fycompa?

Fycompa is an antiepileptic drug that is classified as an AMPA receptor antagonist. Because it is a fairly new medication, its mechanism of action is not completely understood. The AMPA receptor is a type of glutamate receptor, and glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. By blocking this activity, Fycompa may prevent neural overexcitation.

How do I take Fycompa?

Fycompa is normally taken once per day around bedtime. Your doctor will start you out on a small 2mg dose of Fycompa and slowly increase the amount until your maintenance dose is reached. Most adults are prescribed a maintenance dose between 8mg and 12 mg. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions and call your pharmacist to get Fycompa patient assistance if you have any questions about how to take your medication.

Before taking Fycompa, tell your doctor if:

• You have liver or kidney disease.
• You have a history of mental illness.
• You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Fycompa.
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

• You are taking any vitamins or herbal supplements, especially St. John’s wort.

What are the possible side effects of taking Fycompa?

The most serious side effect that Fycompa can cause is changes in mental health.
