What is Kadian?
Kadian is a brand name of the narcotic morphine in capsule form and is used to treat moderate to severe pain lasting more than a few days. It works by blocking pain signals to the brain, and is a classified as a Schedule II controlled substance.
How do I take Kadian?
Kadian is administered in capsule form and taken orally at 12 or 24-hour intervals, depending on the severity of the pain and the strength of the prescription. It is taken with water, with or without food. Do not crush, bite, chew, or break the capsule. If you are not able to swallow the capsule, speak with your physician about an alternative dosing practice. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
Before taking Kadian, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to morphine or any of the ingredients in the Kadian drug capsule
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking, or have taken MAO inhibitors, antihistamines, or diuretics
- You are taking buprenorphine, pentazocine, nalbuphine, butorphanol, or quinidine
- You are taking medications for seizures, mental illness, anxiety, Parkinson disease, urinary problems, irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, Addison’s disease, prostatic hypertrophy, paralytic ileus or any other blockage or narrowing of the intestines or stomach
- You have, or have had, asthma, kyphoscoliosis, COPD, emphysema, bronchitis, or other lung disease, or a head injury
- You have, or have had, gall bladder or pancreas disease, or kidney, liver, or thyroid disease.
What are the possible side effects of taking Kadian?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Kadian. Less severe symptoms include agitation, confusion, diarrhea, difficult or painful urination, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, loss of appetite, mood changes, nausea, nervousness, constricted pupils, stomach pain and cramps, sweating, vomiting, weakness, or weight loss.
Severe side effects requiring immediate Kadian patient assistance include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), blue or purple color skin color, chest pain, extreme drowsiness, fainting, tachycardia, bradycardia, fever, or seizures.
What if I forget to take a dose of Kadian?
The Kadian drug is usually taken on an as needed basis for pain.
How do I store Kadian?
Keep Kadian tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Kadian?
If an overdose of the Kadian is suspected, contact the Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Kadian patient assistance. Symptoms of an overdose include blurred vision, cold, clammy skin, fainting, limp or weak muscles, nausea, sleepiness, bradycardia, slow, shallow, or irregular breathing, constricted pupils.
Warnings
Prolonged use can result in becoming dependent on Kadian. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking Kadian can be life threatening. Kadian can cause drowsiness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Suddenly stopping doses of this medication can cause severe withdrawal.
Brand Names
Kadian is the brand name of drug morphine and is also marketed under other brands such as MS Contin and Avinza. However, there are differences among them and one should not be substituted for the other without a doctor’s permission.
