What is Lazanda?
Lazanda is the drug fentanyl, a narcotic analgesic prescribed to treat sudden episodes (breakthrough) pain in cancer patients who are already using another narcotic analgesic for around the clock treatment of pain and have develop a tolerance of that drug. It works by changing how the nerves and brain perceive pain. Lazanda can only be prescribed by doctors enrolled in a fentanyl safety program, and can only be dispensed by pharmacists who are also in the program. This medication is not to be used to treat any other type of pain.
How do I take Lazanda?
Lazanda is a narcotic nasal spray and is used in only in conjunction with other pain medications. The first time you use Lazanda, your doctor will demonstrate the proper procedure for use and disposal. Follow his or her directives and the instructions that accompany the medication. Do not take more than the prescribed amount. At least two hours must elapse before an additional dose can be administered. Contact your doctor if you still have pain thirty minutes after using Lazanda. Do not take more than four doses in a day. If you stop taking your other pain medications, you will need to stop using Lazanda.
Before taking Lazanda, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to fentanyl or any of the ingredients in Lazanda
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking, or have taken, antibiotics, antifungals, antihistamines, barbiturates, MAOIs; medications for HIV, mental illness, or nausea; muscle relaxants; nasal decongestants; oral steroids; or sedatives, sleeping pills, tranquillizers, or other pain medications
- You are taking, or have taken, nevirapine, nefazodone, naloxone, nalmefene, nalbuphine, modafinil, efavirenz, diltiazem, cimetidine, carbamazepine, aprepitant, buprenorphine, butorphanol, amiodarone, oxcarbazepine, pentazocine, phenytoin, verapamil, rifampin, rifabutin, or pioglitazone
- You are will be undergoing any surgical procedure, including dental
- You have, or have had, COPD, a head injury, a runny nose, any condition that increased pressure within the skull, seizures, asthma or other breathing difficulties, or kidney or liver disease
- You have, or have had, low blood pressure, slow heart rate, a stroke, or any heart problem or condition
- You drink, or you have a family member who drinks excessive quantities of alcohol
- You use, or have used, street drugs or you have a family member who has or does
- You or a family member have abused prescription medications
- You have, or there is a family history of, depression, schizophrenia, any mental illness, or aural or visual hallucinations.
What are the possible side effects of taking Lazanda?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Lazanda. Less severe symptoms include drowsiness, fever, headache, nausea, or vomiting.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing), or any of the symptoms of an overdose.
What if I forget to take a dose of Lazanda?
Lazanda is administered on an as needed; do not take more than four doses per day. Contact your physician if you have more than four breakthrough pain episodes per day. Do not take a larger dose, take it more frequently, or use it for longer than your prescription instructs.
How do I store Lazanda?
Keep Lazanda tightly sealed in its original packaging, securely stored out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the medication to freeze. Keep track of the number of doses remaining in order to monitor for unwarranted use. Dispose of any expired or unused medication according to the instructions that accompanied the medication and the directives of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Lazanda?
If an overdose of Lazanda is suspected, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include confusion, constricted pupils, dizziness, sleepiness, fainting, and shallow, slow, or labored breathing. Seek medical help if someone other the individual for whom Lazanda has been prescribed uses it.
Warnings
Lazanda can be habit forming. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication. Do not take more than four doses of this medication per day. Do not take this medication if you are not taking other prescribed narcotic analgesics. Lazanda can cause serious side effects, including death, to anyone who uses it who is not authorized. Lazanda can only be dispensed by pharmacists enrolled in the fentanyl safety program.
