What is Metadate ER?
Metadate ER is the extended release version of methylphenidate, a central nervous system stimulant prescribed to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); it may also be used to treat narcolepsy. It works by affecting certain chemicals in the brain that are responsible for impulse control.
How do I take Metadate ER?
Metadate ER is administered in tablet form and is taken orally with water once a day, usually before breakfast. The actual dosage will depend on the medical profile of the patient. Always follow the dosing information provided with this medication. Do not stop taking this medication without medical permission.
Before taking Metadate ER, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to methylphenidate or any of the ingredients in Metadate ER
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking methyldopa, venlafaxine, SSRIs, anticoagulants, antidepressants, or decongestants

- You, or anyone in your family, have been treated for depression, mental illness, bipolar disorder, anxiety, agitation, nervousness, mania, thyroid problems, glaucoma, tics (facial, motor, verbal), or Tourette’s syndrome
- You have problems digesting foods containing dairy, sugar, or starch
What are the possible side effects of taking Metadate ER?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Metadate ER. Less severe symptoms include diminished sex drive, diarrhea, sleep problems, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, heartburn, decreased appetite, nausea, muscle tightness, vomiting, restlessness, or nervousness; numb, burning, or tingling extremities; stomach pain; or uncontrollable body movement. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, hoarseness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, throat, mouth, lips, or tongue); tachycardia; chest pain; arrhythmia; agitation; vision changes; paranoia; depression; priapism; extreme fatigue; paranoia; fainting; hallucinations (both visual and aural); mood changes; onset of tics or tremors; shortness of breath; seizures; changes to speech patterns; numb, weak, painful or sensitive limbs or extremities; pale-blue-red change sequencing to color changes of toes or fingers.
What if I forget to take a dose of Metadate ER?
If you miss your scheduled dose Metadate ER, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one that was missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of pills taken nor change the dosing routine to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Metadate ER?
Keep Metadate ER tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children, and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired capsules according to the instructions of a pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Metadate ER?
If an overdose of Metadate ER is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include arrhythmia, agitation, disorientation, dilated pupils, dry nose or mouth, tachycardia, fever, flushing, aural and visual hallucinations, headache, euphoria, elation, twitches, tremors, seizures, sweating, or vomiting.

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Metadate ER. This drug is classified as a controlled substance. Metadate ER may inhibit weight gain or growth in children. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication can exacerbate side effects. This medication may cause a heart attack, stroke, or sudden death in children, teenagers, and adults, especially those with a history of heart defects, heart problems, or heart disease.
