Methylphenidate CD Information:

What is methylphenidate CD?

Methylphenidate CD is a mild central nervous system stimulant. It is believed to help treat some ADHD symptoms by restoring the balance of certain brain chemicals associated with attention and impulse control. This medication is also sometimes prescribed to treat narcolepsy, a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime drowsiness.

How do I take methylphenidate CD?

Take methylphenidate CD once a day in the morning with or without food, unless your doctor has given you different instructions. Swallow the capsule whole; chewing it or breaking it apart may cause too much of the medicine to be released at once. Do not suddenly stop taking methylphenidate CD without talking to your doctor. Abruptly quitting your dosing regimen can lead to unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, so if you do need to stop taking this drug, your doctor may gradually reduce your dose.

Before taking methylphenidate CD, tell your doctor if:

  •  You have any food or drug allergies
  • You are taking any other medications, supplements, or vitamins
  • You have glaucoma
  • You have a history of severe anxiety or agitation
  • You have a personal or family history of Tourette’s syndrome or muscle tics
  • You have high blood pressure or any heart problems
  • You have a family history of heart disease or sudden death
  • You have a history of mental illness or substance abuse
  • You have a seizure disorder or have had an abnormal brain wave test
  • You have blood circulation problems
  • You have any throat, stomach, or intestinal problems
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

What are the possible side effects of taking methylphenidate CD?

Methylphenidate CD may cause nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, dizziness, headache, irritability, or insomnia (especially if taken late in the day). If you have any mild side effects that last a long time or get worse, tell your doctor. If you experience any serious side effects, stop taking methylphenidate CD and contact your doctor right away. Serious side effects may include muscle pain or weakness, muscle tics, severe lightheadedness, hallucinations, unusual mood changes, numbness or discoloration of your fingers or toes, or an erection lasting four or more hours. Very serious side effects that require immediate medical attention may include seizures, fainting, or signs of a heart attack or stroke.

What if I forget to take a dose of methylphenidate CD?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is after 6 pm. In this case, skip the missed dose to minimize your risk of insomnia. Take your next dose at the normal time the next morning.

How do I store methylphenidate CD?

Keep methylphenidate CD in a tightly-sealed container that children and pets can’t access. Store it at room temperature, away from bright light and high humidity. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, consult your pharmacist on proper disposal methods.

What happens if I overdose on methylphenidate CD?

Overdosing on the drug methylphenidate CD may cause serious adverse effects such as confusion, agitation, hallucinations, excessive sweating, muscle twitching, seizures, or loss of consciousness. If you or someone you know has overdosed, call 911 immediately.

Warnings

Methylphenidate CD can be addictive; only take as much of this medicine as your doctor has prescribed, and never share it with anyone else. Don’t drink alcohol while taking methylphenidate CD; alcohol can cause the medicine to be absorbed into the bloodstream too quickly. This medication may cause dizziness, so avoid driving or performing other tasks that require clear focus until you know you can do so safely.
