What is Nucynta ER?

Nucynta ER is the extended release formula of the drug tapentadol, an analgesic of the opioid class. It is prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain, particularly the pain associated with nerve damage in those with diabetes. It is also prescribed to those requiring continuing pain medication when other medications are no longer effective. Nucynta ER is a Schedule II controlled substance as it has potential for abuse and addiction. It is available only through a prescription.

How do I take Nucynta ER?

Nucynta ER is administered in tablet form, taken twice a day, with plenty of water and with or without food. Do not crush, bite, or chew the tablet. Your doctor may gradually increase the dosage of this medication over time. Do not stop taking Nucynta ER without first notifying your healthcare provider.

Before taking Nucynta ER, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to tapentadol or any substances in the Nucynta ER tablet
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking, or have recently stopped taking, MAOIs
  • You are taking SSRIs or SSNRIs
  • You are taking antidepressants, migraine medications, antihistamines, medications to treat irritable bowel syndrome, urinary tract problems, Parkinson’s disease, ulcers, motion sickness, or ulcers
  • You are taking nalbuphine, citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, mirtazapine, sertraline; tramadol, pentazocine, or trazodone
  • You have, or have had, kidney, liver, gallbladder, or thyroid disease or a disease of the pancreas
  • You have been treated for paralytic ileus, stomach or intestinal blockages, or problems of the urinary tract

What are the possible side effects of taking Nucynta ER?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Nucynta ER. Less severe side effects include drowsiness, changes in appetite, general weakness, anxiety, flushing, sweating, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, difficulty sleeping, strange dreams, or a dry mouth. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, fever, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), visual or aural hallucinations, chest pain, seizures, lightheadedness, or fainting. 

What if I forget to take a dose of Nucynta ER?

If you forget to take a scheduled dose of Nucynta ER, skip it completely and the take the next one at the scheduled time. Do not take multiple doses or increase the frequency of dosage to make up for one that was missed. q

How do I store Nucynta ER?

Keep Nucynta ER tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the instructions of a pharmacist. Because of Nucynta ER’s potential for abuse, keep a record of all tablets received and taken in order to monitor for unauthorized use.

What happens if I overdose on Nucynta ER?

If an overdose of Nucynta ER is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include cold and clammy skin, muscle weakness, constricted or dilated pupils, sleepiness, or a slowed heart rate.

Nucynta ER is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance, and has a strong potential for tolerance development, abuse, or addiction. Suddenly discontinuing this drug can result in severe withdrawal; consult your doctor before you stop taking it. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Nucynta ER can cause drowsiness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known.

Brand Names

Nucynta ER is the brand name of the extended-release version of the analgesic drug tapentadol; it is also marketed as Nucynta, but this is a different formulation, and neither should be substituted for the other without the permission of your doctor.
