What is Vesicare?

Vesicare, or solifenacin in its generic form, is an antimuscarinic drug used to treat an overactive bladder or incontinence. Antimuscarinics block muscarinic receptors in the central nervous system which relaxes smooth muscle tissue, including the tissue of the bladder. This allows the bladder to relax and hold a larger volume of urine. It also reduces contractions, allowing for a less frequent need to urinate.

• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of taking Vesicare?

Side effects from taking Vesicare include dry mouth, dry eyes, constipation, decreased sweating, indigestion, blurred vision, dizziness, and fatigue. Serious side effects include extreme thirst, abnormally warm skin or elevated body temperature, severe stomach pain, painful urination, unusually infrequent urination, and constipation that lasts longer than 3 days. If you experience any serious side effects, report them to your doctor at once.

 

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Vesicare?

If you forget to take a dose of Vesicare, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Then continue on your regular schedule. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses in one day to compensate for a missed dose.

• Storage

How do I store Vesicare?

Store Vesicare in an airtight container or in its original packaging. Keep this medication at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Vesicare?

Signs of overdose on Vesicare include flushing, dry eyes and mouth, enlarged pupils, fever, shaking hands, hallucinations, confusion, and coma. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Vesicare, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive or unconscious, call 911.

Warnings

Vesicare can cause the body to have a lessened ability to control overheating. Drink lots of water and try to avoid overexertion.  Drinking grapefruit juice may interfere with this medication.
