Alcortin A Information:
What is Alcortin A?
Alcortin A is a topical gel prescribed to help treat the skin irritation, itching, and inflammation caused by ringworm, eczema, acne, athlete’s foot, impetigo, scalp or hair follicle infections, psoriasis, dermatitis, or a number of skin conditions. This medication combines the aloe polysaccharides found in aloe vera (a healing agent) with both hydrocortisone (an anti-inflammatory steroid) and iodoquinol (an antibiotic and antifungal medication). It works by killing bacteria and fungus and reducing and preventing inflammation.
How do I take Alcortin A?
Alcortin A is a topical gel, applied to an infected area of the skin three or four times a day. The exact frequency will depend on the condition being treated and the patient profile. Before using, thoroughly clean the treatment area with soap and water and pat dry. Apply the designated dosage and gently rub it into the skin. Do not cover the affected area without a doctor’s approval.
Before taking Alcortin A, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to aloe vera, hydrocortisone, iodoquinol, or any of the ingredients in Alcortin A
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are allergic to histidine, palmitic acid, lysine, or glycine
- You are taking any medications that weaken the immune system
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking vigabatrin, medications to treat diabetes, metformin or medications that are combined with metformin, alogliptin, or pioglitazone
- You are taking tolbutamide, nateglinide, glyburide, glimepride, canagliflozin, or glipizide
- You have, or have had, Cushing’s syndrome
- You have, or have had, diabetes or tuberculosis
- You have, or have had, glaucoma, cataracts, or any problems related to the eyes
What are the possible side effects of taking Alcortin A?
Some individuals have reported side effects after using Alcortin A. Less severe conditions include acne, changes in color of the skin in the treated area, increased body or facial hair, reddening or crusting around hair follicles, stretch marks, or mild itching, burning, drying, or irritation of the skin. However, if any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe symptoms requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), signs of a new or worsening infection, blurred vision or other vision problems, severe burning or irritation of the skin, unexplained weight gain, or increased swelling or redness in the area treated.
What if I forget to take a dose of Alcortin A?
If you miss a scheduled application of Alcortin A, apply it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is close to the time for the next regular dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular regimen. Do not increase the amount used or the frequency of use to compensate for missed doses.
How do I store Alcortin A?
Keep Alcortin A tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the gel to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired amounts according to the instructions of a pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Alcortin A?
If an overdose of Alcortin A is suspected, or if it has been accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or fallen unconscious, contact Emergency Services.
