Betoptic S Information:
What is Betoptic S?
Betoptic S belongs to the class of drugs known as beta blockers. It works by decreasing the amount of fluid that the eye produces, thus reducing pressure and helping to prevent blindness.
How do I take Betoptic S?
Betoptic S comes in the form of eye drops. Prior to using Betoptic S, wash your hands and avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye. Remove your contact lenses before using eye drops, and wait at least 15 minutes after applying the drops before replacing them. Before each use, shake the bottle well. While looking upward, tilt your head back and pull down on your lower eyelid to form a crevice. Hold the dropper directly above the crevice and place one drop in your eye twice a day, or as directed by your healthcare provider. Look down and gradually close your eyes for 1-2 minutes while applying a gentle pressure at the corner of your eye near your nose to prevent the medication from leaking out. Avoid blinking or rubbing at your eye. Repeat these steps for your other eye. Following use, replace the dropper cap without rinsing the dropper. Even if you feel well, continue to use this medication. It is best to use it regularly at the same times every day to get the maximum benefits.
Before taking Betoptic S, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to the medication or any other beta blockers (i.e. metipranolol and timolol), or any of the other ingredients, including the inactive ones (i.e. preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride)
- Have any other allergies
- You have any heart rhythm problems (i.e. sinus bradycardia) or any serious heart conditions (i.e. cardiogenic shock, any sort of heart failure)
- You have a medical history of diabetes, low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), muscle weakness disorders (i.e. myasthenia gravis), breathing problems (including asthma), low blood flow to the brain, or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast-feeding
What are the possible side effects of taking Betoptic S?
Less serious and more common side effects include mildly swollen or puffy eyes; altered sense of taste or smell; muscle weakness; sleep problems; depression, headaches, dizziness, and/or spinning sensations; the feeling that something is in your eye; and a mild burning, stinging, itching, or discomfort of your eyes. If you experience any serious side effects, immediately stop using Betoptic S and contact your doctor. Serious side effects may include: swelling; rapid weight gain; shortness of breath even with little exertion; bronchospasm; severe swelling, itching, pain, redness, burning, or discomfort around or in your eye; drainage or crusting of your eyes or eyelids; slow heart rate; weak pulse; fainting; or slow breathing.
What if I forget to take a dose of Betoptic S?
If you forget to take a dose of Betoptic S, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip your missed dose completely and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not use additional doses to make up for your missed dose.
How do I store Betoptic S?
Store Betoptic S at room temperature (59-86°F; 15-30°C) in an area away from light and moisture (and out of the bathroom). Be sure to keep Betoptic S away from children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Betoptic S?
If you or someone you know might have overdosed on Betoptic S, namely from orally ingesting it, contact your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 or go to an emergency right away. Swallowing Betoptic S may cause slow/irregular heartbeat or trouble breathing.
Warnings
Tell your doctor or dentist you are using Betoptic S prior to any surgeries. If you are using any other eye medications, wait a minimum of 10 minutes before using the other medications. If you have diabetes, Betoptic S may mask the feelings of a fast and pounding heartbeat associated with hypoglycemia (when your blood sugar falls too low), but not other symptoms, such as dizziness and sweating. As Betoptic S may cause you to be dizzy or have blurred vision, do not drive, use machinery, or do any other activity that requires clear vision or alertness until any symptoms have completely passed. Limit intake of alcoholic beverages while using Betoptic S. If you have eye surgery while using Betoptic S, or develop an eye infection, talk to your doctor about possibly starting a new bottle of Betoptic S.
