• What

Clonidine ER is a drug that contains clonidine hydrochloride, a centrally acting alpha-agonist hypotensive agent. It stimulates alpha-adrenoreceptors in the brain stem that, when activated, decrease vascular resistance, heart rate, and blood pressure. This action helps mitigate the damage associated with hypertension, also called high blood pressure.

• How

Take clonidine ER in the morning and when you go to bed. If you take two differently-sized doses of this medicine per day, take the larger dose in the evening. Swallow the medication whole with or without food. Do not use orally administered clonidine ER at the same time as the transdermal patch.

• Precautions

Before taking clonidine ER, tell your doctor if:

• You have heart disease or severe coronary artery disease

Use of clonidine ER has been associated with such common side effects as drowsiness, dizziness, irritability, dry mouth, dry eyes, loss of appetite, constipation, insomnia, and nightmares. Alert your physician as soon as possible if you notice serious side effects such as severe chest pain, shortness of breath, a very slow heart rate, irregular heartbeats, pounding in your neck or ears, blurred vision, severe headache, nosebleeds, anxiety, confusion, or light-headedness.

Store clonidine ER at room temperature and be sure to keep it away from pollutants such as moisture, heat, and light.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on clonidine ER?

Overdose symptoms may include dangerously high blood pressure followed by low blood pressure, feeling cold, extreme weakness or drowsiness, weak or shallow breathing, pinpoint pupils, fainting, or seizure. Seek emergency medical help or call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 if you or someone in your home has overdosed.

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking clonidine ER. Alcohol may make some of the side effects of this medication worse. Clonidine ER may impair your ability to think and react. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine will affect your coordination.
