Coumadin Information:

What is Coumadin?

Coumadin is a brand name for the anticoagulant (commonly called a blood thinner) medication, warfarin. Coumadin is a drug prescribed to stop the clotting of blood cells and fibrin protein inside of blood vessels. This clotting of blood cells is called a thrombus. Coumadin works by stopping the synthesis of an enzyme made from vitamin K that leads to the production of clotting factors and proteins in the blood. By preventing the formation of blood clots that can obstruct blood flow, Coumadin helps to prevent strokes. One of the downsides to taking Coumadin is that it affects the body’s processing of vitamin K, and patients need to avoid normally healthy foods like leafy greens that contain high amounts of vitamin K.

How do I take Coumadin?

Print one of our Coumadin coupons to lower the price in your local pharmacy when you buy your medication. Your doctor should schedule routine tests to check the level of Coumadin in your blood and to be sure your medication is working properly. Follow any dietary instructions provided by your doctor as Coumadin can interact with many substances. See the warnings section for more information. Coumadin comes in the form of pills to be taken orally, and it is usually taken once per day. The amount of Coumadin prescribed varies greatly from person to person. Your doctor will do a PT or INR test to monitor your prothrombin time or blood clotting time in order to prescribe the optimal dosage.

Before taking Coumadin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any medications.
  • You regularly drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are taking any other medications whether they are prescription or over-the-counter; Coumadin can interact with an extensive list of medications.
  • You are taking any vitamins or supplements, especially vitamin K and herbal supplements. Coumadin may interact with CoQ10, ginseng, Echinacea, garlic, St. John’s wort, and more.
  • You are scheduled for surgery or any other invasive medical or dental procedure.
  • You have or have ever had diabetes.
  • You have diarrhea or any gastrointestinal disorders.

What are the possible side effects of taking Coumadin?

Possible Coumadin drug side effects include bloating, indigestion, mild stomach pain, mild nausea, and a change in your sense of taste. Serious Coumadin side effects include swelling, severe stomach or back pain, hemorrhage or unexplained bleeding, unexplained bruising, chills or a cold sensation, foot pain, purple fingers or toes, jaundice, gangrene, and flu-like symptoms. If you experienced any of these serious side effects or any unusual side effect, contact your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of Coumadin?

If you forget to take one of your Coumadin pills, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose of Coumadin, skip the missed dose and keep on your normal schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How do I store Coumadin?

Store Coumadin pills in an airtight container at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect your medication from light and moisture and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Coumadin?

Signs of Coumadin overdose include the appearance of blood in stools or urine, unexplained bruising, and unexplained bleeding that won’t stop. If you are experiencing hemorrhaging or bleeding that won’t stop, get to your hospital so that doctors may begin reversing the anticoagulation effects of Coumadin at once.

Warnings

Coumadin may interact with several medications and vitamins, especially vitamin K. Follow your doctor’s dietary instructions and keep your lab appointments to be tested regularly. Avoid drinking alcohol as it can thin your blood even more, increasing the risk of hemorrhage. Also avoid drinking cranberry juice. Make sure your doctor knows about any other medications, prescription or not, that you are taking.

Always tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Coumadin pills before having any kind of procedure because your blood will not clot to naturally stop bleeding. Because of this, also be extra careful when shaving, brushing your teeth, or doing anything else that can cause what would normally be minor bleeding.

Other brand names for Coumadin include Jantoven. The generic name for these medications is Warfarin. Use our printable Coumadin drug coupons to reduce the price in your pharmacy by up to 82%. Also browse discounts on similar medications to compare costs.
