Erythromycin Ethylsuccinate Information:
Erythromycin ethylsuccinate is a macrolide antibiotic medication prescribed to treat a number of bacterial infections, including diphtheria, pertussis and other infections of the upper respiratory tract, urinary tract infections, certain STDs, ear infections, and intestinal tract infections (among others), and to prevent recurrent rheumatic fever. It kills or slows the growth of bacteria by reducing the production of specific proteins the bacteria need to survive.
The erythromycin ethylsuccinate medicine is dispensed as a tablet that is taken orally, with water and without regard to food. The actual dosing regimen will be determined by your doctor based on the condition being treated and your medical profile. Follow the dosing instructions exactly and continue taking the medication for the duration of the prescription, even if you feel better.
Before taking erythromycin ethylsuccinate tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to erythromycin or any of the ingredients in the erythromycin succinate drug tablet
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking astemizole, alprazolam, cisapride, dihydroergotamine, bromocriptine, carbamazepine, cilostazol, ergotamine, pimozide, amlodipine, terfenadine, anticoagulants, colchicine, cyclosporine, verapamil, theophylline, triazolam, phenytoin, procainamide, quinidine, disopyramide, dofetilide, lovastatin, digoxin, diltiazem, midazolam, sildenafil, simvastatin, sotalol, or valproic acid
- You have, or have had, myasthenia gravis, arrhythmia, a prolonged QT interval, liver disease, or low blood potassium or magnesium levels
As with all medications, side effects are possible when taking erythromycin ethylsuccinate. Mild side effects may include diarrhea, appetite loss, stomach pain, an upset stomach, or vomiting. If these appear, and they linger or get worse, contact your doctor. Severe side effects require immediate medical attention. These side effects may include darkened urine, signs of jaundice or a liver infection, pale stool color, unusual fatigue, severe diarrhea, tachycardia, arrhythmia, or seizures.
If you forget a scheduled dose of your erythromycin ethylsuccinate medicine, take it as soon as you remember and are able. If it is almost time for the next one, however, skip it and return to the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of tablets taken or alter the dosing pattern to make up for a missed dose.
Keep doses of the erythromycin ethylsuccinate tablets tightly sealed in their original container, out of the reach of children and in a location free from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not store in the bathroom. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.
If an overdose of the erythromycin ethylsuccinate drug occurs, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking erythromycin ethylsuccinate. This medication will not work on viral infections. Do not take this medication for conditions other than those for which it was prescribed. Notify your doctor of any surgery you may have scheduled, including dental surgery.
