Felodipine Er Information:
What is felodipine ER?
Felodipine ER is an extended release medication and a calcium channel blocker used to control hypertension. This medication works to lower blood pressure by blocking calcium currents which has the effect of dilating and relaxing small blood vessels and smooth muscle tissue. This allows the blood be pumped more easily and puts less strain on the heart. Felodipine also has a slight diuretic effect. The ER in felodipine ER stands for extended release, meaning that your dose will be slowly released in your system over time. These tablets are designed to work over a 24 hour period.
How do I take felodipine ER?
Felodipine ER is taken orally once per day and is prescribed by your doctor. This medication comes in the form of 2.5mg, 5mg, or 10mg extended release tablets. Do not crush, break, or chew the extended release tablets. This will destroy the release mechanism. Take your medication at the same time every day. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking felodipine. Follow any dietary instructions provided by your doctor.
Before taking felodipine ER, tell your doctor if:
- You’ve had uncompensated heart failure.
- You‘ve had an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).
- You‘ve had any kind of valvular heart disease.
- You’ve had unstable angina pectoris.
- You are lactose intolerant.
- You have heart, kidney, or liver disease.
- You are pregnant or breast feeding.
- You are allergic to felodipine or any of the other ingredients in this medication.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, or supplements.
What are the possible side effects of taking felodipine ER?
Possible side effects from taking felodipine ER include accelerated heart rate, dizziness, flushing, headache, indigestion, constipation, and enlarged gum tissue. More serious side effects include fainting and allergic reaction. If you experience any severe or unusual side effects, contact your doctor at once.
What if I forget to take a dose of felodipine ER?
If you forget a dose of felodipine ER, take it as soon as you remember, as long as it is more than 12 hours before the next dose is due. If it is less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to. Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose that you missed. If you have trouble remembering when to take your medicine, ask your pharmacist for advice.
How do I store felodipine ER?
Keep all tablets in their blister pack or airtight container until it is time to take your dose. Do not store near heat or damp areas. Keep in a locked area out of the reach of children and pets. Protect this medication from exposure to light.
What happens if I overdose on felodipine ER?
An overdose of felodipine may result in extremely low blood pressure. In case of an overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
