Gatifloxacin Information:

What is gatifloxacin?

Gatifloxacin is an antibiotic drug specifically used to treat bacterial eye infections. It works by killing the strain of bacteria causing the infection. It is only available in a 0.5% liquid solution.

How do I take gatifloxacin?

Follow your doctor’s dosage instructions very carefully: most people apply the gatifloxacin medicine every two hours for the first two days of use and then every four hours for the remainder of their treatment. Always wash your hands before applying eye drops, and keep the eye dropper from touching any surfaces in order to avoid contamination. When you are ready to apply an eye drop, tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid down slightly to form a pouch. Squeeze one drop in while looking up and away from the dropper, and close your eye for several minutes after applying the drop. Keep a finger gently pressed to the inside corner of your eye to prevent liquid from seeping out while your eye is closed.

Before taking gatifloxacin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
  • You wear contact lenses
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking gatifloxacin?

Possible side effects of the gatifloxacin drug include mild eye irritation, headache, puffy eyelids, or a strange taste in the mouth. Side effects usually go away on their own, but let your doctor know if you have any side effects that persist or worsen, or if your eye infection gets worse while using gatifloxacin. Inform your doctor immediately if you have any unlikely but serious side effects, including severe discomfort of the eye or surrounding area, vision changes, increased sensitivity to light, eye discharge, or a skin rash.

What if I forget to take a dose of gatifloxacin?

Apply your missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In this case, skip the missed one and continue with your normal dosage schedule. Never apply more eye drops than your doctor has prescribed for a single dose.

How do I store gatifloxacin?

Keep your bottle of gatifloxacin tightly sealed and out of reach of children and pets when you aren’t using the medication. Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. If the liquid in the bottle changes colors or has particles floating in it, you will need to throw it out. Contact your pharmacist to find out how to safely dispose of this medicine, and contact your doctor to get a new prescription.

What happens if I overdose on gatifloxacin?

It is unlikely that you will experience any overdose effects when applying gatifloxacin to your eyes. However, this liquid solution may be harmful if swallowed. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away if you or anyone in your household has swallowed some of this drug.

Warnings

Do not wear contact lenses when applying gatifloxacin (as a general rule, you should not wear contact lenses at all when you have a bacterial eye infection). Do not use any other eye medications while using gatifloxacin unless your doctor has expressly given you permission to do so.

Brand Name

Gatifloxacin is the generic form of Zymaxid. As a generic drug, it is typically less expensive than its brand name equivalent, but it can still be costly if your insurance provider doesn’t cover it.
