Gentamicin Information:

What is Gentamicin?

Gentamicin is a generic, aminoglycoside antibiotic that is administered by liquid injection, and it is used to treat certain serious infections that are caused by bacteria including meningitis. It works by killing bacteria that causes infection.

Gentamicin is also used to treat infections of the blood, abdomen lungs, skin, bones, joints, and urinary tract. This drug is also sometimes used to treat pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and granuloma inguinale, or donovanosis, a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It may also be used to treat other serious infections such as the plague.

How do I use Gentamicin?

Gentamicin comes as a liquid to be injected either intravenously or intramuscularly. A healthcare professional may administer this drug to you in the hospital or at a doctor’s office, or at your home. If you will be administering Gentamicin injections to yourself at home, your healthcare provider will show you how to use the medication.

Do not stop using Gentamicin until you are done with all of your medication, and do not skip doses. If you do not finish using all of your medication, your infection may not be completely treated and the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics.

Before using Gentamicin, tell your doctor if:

  • you are allergic to Gentamicin or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or nutritional or herbal supplements

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

  • you have or have ever had cystic fibrosis

  • you have or have ever had any problems with your muscles, such as Parkinson's disease

Additional precautions:

  • If you are having surgery, tell your doctor that you are taking this medication.

  • Antibiotics such as Gentamicin will not work to treat colds, flu, or other viral infections. Do not take antibiotics when they are not needed, as doing so increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

What are the possible side effects of using Gentamicin?

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

  • nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

  • decreased appetite

  • pain at the injection site

  • headache

  • fever

  • joint pain

  • unusual fatigue

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • rash, itching, or hives

  • peeling or blistering of the skin

  • swelling of the eyes, face, throat, tongue, or lips

  • difficulty breathing or difficulty swallowing

  • hoarseness

What if I forget to use a dose of Gentamicin?

Gentamicin is typically administered by a healthcare professional. If you missed your appointment to receive Gentamicin, contact your doctor or healthcare professional to schedule another appointment. If you are administering your Gentamicin injection to yourself and you missed a dose, contact your doctor for information on when to next take your dose.

How do I store Gentamicin?

Your doctor will typically store this medication. However, if you are administering this medication to yourself at home, consult with your doctor for information on how to store this medication.

What happens if I overdose on Gentamicin?

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

Do not let anyone else use your medication.
