Lansoprazole Information:
What is lansoprazole?
Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Proton pump inhibitors are a group of drugs that reduce gastric acid. According to Consumer Reports “all PPIs work well”. The cost of prescription PPIs can range from $183-$374 per month. The monthly lansoprazole cost is under $50. Lansoprazole can be used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcers. Lansoprazole works by preventing the production of acid in the stomach.
How do I take lansoprazole?
Prescription lansoprazole comes as a delayed released capsule, or a disintegrating tablet to be taken orally. Non-prescription lansoprazole only comes in the delayed release capsule variety. The medicine should be taken once a day before a meal. Lansoprazole should be taken around the same time every day. Capsules should be swallowed whole and not chewed or cut. Do not take lansoprazole for immediate heartburn relief.
Before taking lansoprazole, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to lansoprazole.
- You have low levels of magnesium in your blood, or if you have a liver disease.
- You have had heartburn has lasted longer than 3 months, you have experienced dizziness, chest or shoulder pain, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing food, or black or bloody stools.
- You take antibiotics, blood thinners, diuretics, iron supplements, or methotrexate.
What are the possible side effects of taking lansoprazole?
Common side effects from taking lansoprazole include constipation, nausea, headache, dizziness, rash, blistering or peeling skin, allergic reaction, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hoarseness, lightheadedness, muscle spasms, seizures, severe diarrhea, stomach pain or fever. Contact your doctor right away if you experience any serious side effects.
What if I forget to take a dose of lansoprazole?
If you miss a dose of lansoprazole, take it as soon as you can. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take a double dose.
How do I store lansoprazole?
Store lansoprazole at room temperature in a cool, dry place. Keep this medication tightly closed in a moisture-proof container. Protect it from light and keep it away from children and pets. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
What happens if I overdose on lansoprazole?
The effects of overdose on lansoprazole in humans are not known (although the acute toxicity is likely to be low). Daily doses of up to 180mg of lansoprazole orally and up to 90mg intravenously have been administered in trials without significant undesirable effects.
In the case of suspected overdose the patient should be monitored. If necessary, gastric emptying, charcoal and symptomatic therapy is recommended. If you or someone you know has overdosed, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has slowed or stopped breathing or has lost consciousness, contact 911 emergency services.
Warnings
