What is linezolid?

Linezolid is an oxazolidinone antibiotic that cures infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It can eliminate these resistant bacteria because its mechanism of action is slightly different. Like other antibiotics, it disrupts bacterial protein synthesis, but instead of stopping synthesis later on in the process, it stops the initiation of bacterial synthesis altogether. This antibiotic is well-tolerated, and it can even can be used by people with liver disease or low kidney function.

How do I take linezolid?

Take linezolid pills at the same time every day. They may be taken with or without food. The duration of your treatment will depend on your condition. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for your particular illness. Linezolid also comes in the form of a solution that may be administered via IV in a hospital setting.

Before taking linezolid, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in linezolid medicine.
  • You are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications, including antidepressants or MAOIs, migraine medications, amphetamines or ADHD medications, other antibiotics or carbamazepine.
  • You have carcinoid syndrome.
  • You have ever had a chronic infection.
  • You have high blood pressure or diabetes.
  • You have hyperthyroidism.
  • You have an autoimmune disease or trouble with your immune system.
  • You have seizures.
  • You have kidney disease.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking linezolid?

Possible linezolid drug side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, constipation and trouble sleeping. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Serious side effects that should be addressed immediately include abdominal pain, blood or mucus in stools, negative mood changes, changes in vision, sore throat, fever, seizures, swelling, and unusual bleeding or bruising. If you experience any unusual side effects, tell your doctor right away.

What if I forget to take a dose of linezolid?

If you forget to take a dose of linezolid, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. This may mean adding another day to your course of treatment. Always take all the antibiotics you are prescribed to avoid bacterial resistance.

How do I store linezolid?

Store linezolid at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit and keep your medication out of reach of children and pets. Store it in an airtight container and keep it away from moisture and light.

What happens if I overdose on linezolid?

Signs of linezolid drug overdose may include tremors, vomiting and lack of coordination. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on linezolid, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If symptoms are severe, call 911.

Warnings

After taking a course of antibiotics, such as linezolid, it is possible that a yeast infection could develop. Seek treatment as needed. Linezolid will not work to treat a flu or other viral infections.
