Metoprolol Information:

What is Metoprolol?

Metoprolol is a generic beta blocker that is used to treat high blood pressure. It may be prescribed alone or for use in combination with other medications.

This medication is also used to improve survival in patients who have had a heart attack. It is used to prevent angina, or chest pain, and it is used in conjunction with other medications to treat heart failure.

This medication works by relaxing the blood vessels and slowing the heart rate, which leads to easier blood flow through the blood vessels and to a decrease in blood pressure.

This drug is also used to prevent migraine headaches, to treat an irregular heartbeat, and to treat movement disorders that are caused by medications for mental illness.

How do I use Metoprolol?

Metoprolol is available as a tablet and as an extended-release (or long-acting) tablet to be taken orally. If you are taking the tablet, it is typically prescribed to be taken 1 or2 times per day with meals or right after finishing a meal. If you are taking the extended-release tablet, it is typically prescribed to be taken 1 time per day. You may split the extended-release tablet and swallow each half or the entire tablet whole. Do not crush or chew the extended-release tablets, as doing so may cause the drug to release into your body all at once.
