Neosporin Information:

What is Neosporin?

Neosporin is an effective topical combination originally formulated to deliver the antibacterial combination of neomycin, polymyxin, and bacitracin to minor skin cuts, scrapes and burns and halt bacterial growth in exposed injuries.  Neosporin in its original form contains three different antibiotics—bacitracin, neomycin and polymyxin B—in a patented base of cocoa butter, cottonseed oil, sodium pyruvate, tocopheryl acetate and petroleum jelly. Generically named Triple Antibiotic Ointment, the added neomycin can result in allergic reactions in some people, so a modified Double Antibiotic Ointment is sold under the co-brand, Polysporin, which contains only bacitracin and polymyxin B.

It has been modified to include pain relief medication and is used for individuals from early childhood through adulthood. Neosporin in the form of eye drops is also an effective treatment for eye infections. While different studies have been conducted to examine benefits and side effects for the various Neosporin uses, mixed successes have been recorded. One study showed no evidence at all that covering a small wound with Polysporin (the Double Antibiotic Ointment) provided any greater benefit than pure petroleum jelly and another study indicated that minor wounds treated with Neosporin significantly decreased the likelihood of infection.

How do I take Neosporin?

You can save on the retail Neosporin price by purchasing your medications at your local pharmacy using our free Neosporin coupon or discount card. You should discuss the proper use of Neosporin with your doctor or pharmacist. You may also read through the “What is Neosporin” information packet included with each box of Neosporin.

Neosporin is for external use only. Do not use in or near the eyes, nose or mouth. Should the Neosporin medication come into contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with cool tap water. Do not use Neosporin for deep cuts, puncture wounds, animal bites, serious burns, or a wound which requires attention to a large area of your body (a large scrape or burn, for example), do not use Neosporin over the entire area without first checking with your doctor. To treat small wounds, apply a small amount of Neosporin ointment to the affected area and gently massage in until it is evenly distributed. You should cover the treated area with bandages. Remove the bandages and retreat the affected area one to three times per day. Although Neosporin is available without a prescription, if your doctor provides specific directions for its use, you should follow your doctor’s instructions.

Before taking Neosporin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, are planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medication, vitamins, herbal preparations or dietary supplements.
  • You have any allergies.
  • You have or have ever had hearing problems or kidney disease.
  • You have deep wounds, puncture wounds, animal bites or serious burns.

What are the possible side effects of taking Neosporin?

Neosporin should not result in adverse side effects when used in small doses. However, some people may experience severe allergic reactions, which include rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, swelling of and around the mouth, skin irritation, pain, burning, cracking, redness or peeling skin or faintness which occurred only after Neosporin uses.

What if I forget to take a dose of Neosporin?

If you forget to reapply your Neosporin, remove the bandage (if applicable, gently clean the wound and reapply Neosporin as soon as you remember.  Do not apply more than a fingertip-sized dab of medicine to make up for the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Neosporin?

You should not swallow Neosporin, but if someone does accidentally swallow it, you should call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Neosporin medication may interact with some medicines; however, because very little, if any, Neosporin ointment is absorbed into the blood, the risk of interaction is very low.
