Prolensa Information:

What is Prolensa?

The Prolensa drug is the medication bromfenac ophthalmic, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug in solution form. It is used to treat pain and swelling following cataract or other types of eye surgery; it may also be used treat edema in the eye or as an aid for the doctor during a surgical procedure.

How do I take Prolensa?

Prolensa is administered in solution form and applied by dropper to the affected eye. While the actual dosing schedule will vary from patient to patient, it is typically done once a day, beginning the day before and the day of the medical procedure, and then for fourteen days following the surgery. Make sure your hands are clean before applying the drops. If you do not have experience using an ophthalmic solution, or are reticent about using it, discuss the issue with your physician to receive additional instructions and assistance.

Before taking Prolensa, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to bromfenac or any ingredients in the Prolensa solution
  • You are allergic to aspirin or to other NSAIDs
  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or nutritional supplements
  • You are taking anticoagulants, NSAIDs, or aspirin
  • You are using any eye drop medications, either prescription or non-prescription
  • You have, or have had, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or conditions that contribute to frequent or easy bleeding
  • You have dry eye syndrome, or other eye conditions
  • You wear contact lenses
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or nursing a child

What are the possible side effects of taking Prolensa?

Some patients have reported side effects from using Prolensa. Less severe side effects include itching, burning, or stinging of the eyes; feeling like there is something in the eye; and headaches. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor immediately.

Severe side effects that require immediate medical attention include sensitivity to light, obscured, blurry, or cloudy vision; eye pain; bleeding in the eye; or signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, swelling of the eyes or face).

What if I forget to take a dose of Prolensa?

If the regularly scheduled dose of Prolensa is missed, administer the drops as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is near the time for the next scheduled dosage, skip the one missed and resume the normal schedule. Do not administer multiple drops to make up for the missed one.

How do I store Prolensa?

Keep Prolensa tightly sealed in its original container and out of the reach of children. Keep the medication safe from the extremes of temperature and humidity, and do not allow the solution to freeze. Unused or expired quantities should be disposed of according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Prolensa?

If Prolensa is ingested, contact Poison Control immediately at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing, collapsed, or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

Do not administer Prolensa while wearing contact lenses. The Prolensa drug may slow down the healing following eye surgery. Prolensa is not to be taken internally.
