Rocephin Information:

What is Rocephin?

Rocephin is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is used to help control certain bacterial infections and to help prevent infections during certain types of surgery. It is delivered by a Rocephin injection either as an intravenous process or injected into a muscle. A Rocephin iv may take up to thirty minutes to complete. Rocephin kills bacteria and prevents their growth, but it will not work for flus, colds, and other viruses. Rocephin uses include treating meningitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, gonorrhea, and infections of various areas and parts of the body. There are other Rocephin uses as well including the treatment of typhoid fever, endocarditis, Lyme disease and other tick-borne bacterial illnesses, shigella, salmonella, and bites from humans or animals.

How do I take Rocephin?

Patients prescribed this medication receive a Rocephin injection once or twice a day either into muscle tissue or a vein through a Rocephin I.V., for four days to two weeks. The Rocephin shot may be delivered in a medical facility or by the patient or it can be self-administered. If self-administered, your healthcare professional will instruct you in the proper procedure for using the injection apparatus. Follow the instructions exactly, and use no more nor less than the amount prescribed. If you are required to mix the medication, it must be used within a limited time. If you have any questions about proper administration of a Rocephin injection, speak with your doctor.

Before taking Rocephin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to ceftriaxone (the Rocephin antibiotic), or other antibiotics or medications
  • You are allergic to cephalosporin or penicillin
  • You are pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking any medications intravenously
  • You are taking medications or treatments that contain calcium
  • You have, or have had, colitis
  • You have, or have had, problems with your digestive tract, or suffer from nutrition
  • You have, or have had, kidney, gallbladder, or liver disease

What are the possible side effects of taking Rocephin?

Some patients who have been prescribed this medication have reported Rocephin side effects. Less severe side effects of Rocephin include pain, tenderness, or swelling at the Rocephin shot site; lightheadedness or dizziness; flushing or sweating, and diarrhea. If any of these Rocephin side effects persist or worsen, contact your physician.

Severe Rocephin side effects requiring immediate medical attention include gastrointestinal problems such as stomach pain, nausea, bloating, cramps, vomiting, and bloody or watery stools; heartburn, chest pain, fever, and development of a rash. An allergic reaction to the Rocephin antibiotic is another possible side effect of Rocephin. These symptoms include swelling of the lips, face, mouth, throat, and tongue and difficult breathing or swallowing. Seek medical help if these conditions appear.

What if I forget to take a dose of Rocephin?

If you are self-administering this medication and you miss a scheduled dose, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next injection or infusion, skip the missed one and resume the normal schedule. Do not take multiple doses to compensate for the one missed.

How do I store Rocephin?

Store Rocephin in the container it came in and according to the instructions of the prescribing physician. If you will be self-administering a Rocephin injection, keep it and the needles and related materials, including all Rocephin I.V. equipment, away from children. Dispose of any expired or unused doses of this medication according to the recommendations of a pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Rocephin?

If an overdose of Rocephin is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or has lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Rocephin. Do not mix Rocephin with other antibiotics, medications, or liquids containing calcium. Flush the Rocephin iv catheter between injections, especially if it is used to deliver other medications. Do not share needles.
