Telmisartan Information:

What is telmisartan?

Telmisartan is a blood pressure medication that is classified as an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). This means it works by blocking angiotensin II, an enzyme that causes the blood vessels to constrict and increases heart rate. By relaxing the blood vessels and putting less strain on the heart, blood pressure is reduced.

How do I take telmisartan?

Telmisartan comes in the form of a pill, and it is normally prescribed to be taken once per day at the same time every day. It may be taken with or without food. Your doctor may slowly increase your dose overtime until your blood pressure is controlled. With most patients, blood pressure is maintained at a dose between 20mg and 80mg per day. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions for your individual requirements.

Before taking telmisartan, tell your doctor if:

  • You have diabetes or high blood sugar levels.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, including ACE inhibitors and other blood pressure medications, NSAIDs, aspirin, diuretics, lithium and potassium supplements.
  • You have or have ever had heart failure.
  • You have a bile duct blockage, gallstones or any abdominal pain.
  • You have kidney or liver disease.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in telmisartan medicine.

What are the possible side effects of taking telmisartan?

Possible telmisartan drug side effects include dizziness and feeling lightheaded. Get up slowly from a reclining position. If these side effects are severe, or you experience nausea or fainting, tell your doctor right away. Other serious side effects that you should tell your doctor about immediately include swelling in the hands, feet or legs, elevated heart rate, changes in vision, changes in urination, slow or irregular heartbeat, trouble breathing, allergic reaction and unusual muscle weakness.

What if I forget to take a dose of telmisartan?

If you forget to take a dose of telmisartan, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal routine. Do not take a double dose of telmisartan to try to compensate for missing one.

How do I store telmisartan

Store telmisartan at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit.  Protect the pills from light and moisture and keep them out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on telmisartan?

Signs of overdose on telmisartan may include dizziness, low blood pressure, elevated heart rate and slow breathing. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on telmisartan, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, call 911.

Warnings

In rare cases, telmisartan may cause muscle tissue to break down. This medication can make you dizzy. Get up slowly from a reclining position, limit alcohol intake, and don’t drive or operate machinery until you are sure how this medication will affect you.
