Warfarin Information:
Warfarin is a prescription medication that can be used to treat high blood pressure. A doctor may recommend this type of treatment if you are at significant risk for a serious blood clot that can trigger heart attacks and strokes.
Take warfarin exactly as your doctor prescribes. Your dose of warfarin will be unique to your blood tests and how your body responds to the medication. Follow your doctor's instructions very carefully when taking this medication to minimize the risk of side effects.
Before taking warfarin, tell your doctor if:
- You have bleeding problems
- You have liver or kidney problems
- You have congestive heart failure
- You have diabetes
- You plan to have surgery or a dental procedure
- You have any other medical conditions
- You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
- You are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed your baby
Taking medications like warfarin increases your risk for internal bleeding that can lead to death. You should contact your doctor if you notice bruises, swelling, headaches, dizziness, weakness, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, pink or brown urine, red or black stools, coughing up blood, or vomiting blood.
If you forget to take warfarin, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your following dose, only take one warfarin dose to avoid side effects.
Store warfarin in a room with a temperature between 59 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid leaving your medication in the car or in the bathroom where excess moisture can change the composition of the active ingredients. Don’t leave this or any other prescription drugs somewhere that children or pets can reach.
If you or someone in your home overdoses on warfarin, call 911 immediately. An overdose on warfarin can cause serious internal bleeding that can lead to death.
You have a higher chance of internal bleeding if you take warfarin when you are over the age of 65. You should discuss your medical history with your doctor and disclose all of the medications you are taking to avoid life-threatening health conditions.
Warfarin is a generic version of branded therapy called Coumadin. Generics deliver the same or similar therapeutic effects as branded drugs and often cost about 80-85% less at the pharmacy. You can further lower the price of both generic and branded treatments by using the coupons on our site.
