Actos Information:
What is Actos?
Actos is in the glitazones class of drugs. It is sometimes prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes to help restore the body’s insulin processing function, lowering blood sugar levels as a result. By keeping blood sugar levels down, the Actos medicine helps reduce the risk of serious long-term health issues, including kidney damage, loss of limbs, heart attack, and stroke.
How do I take Actos?
Your specific Actos dosage will depend on your blood sugar levels, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Most people who need this medication take one dose per day with or without food. To help you remember your medication, take it at the same time every day. Measure and record your blood sugar levels regularly, as your doctor may need to adjust your treatment.
Before taking Actos, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication or have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
- You have a history of heart problems
- You have liver disease
- You have anemia
- You have edema or macular edema
- You have fluid in your lungs
- You have or have had bladder cancer
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Actos?
The Actos medicine may cause high or low blood sugar levels, so talk to your doctor about what symptoms to watch out for. You may also experience a sore throat, tooth problems, muscle pain, or weight gain. If any of these side effects become bothersome, tell your doctor. You should contact your doctor immediately if you have any rare but serious side effects, including changes in vision, bone fractures, frequent or painful urination, dark or reddish-colored urine, jaundice, stomach pain, or persistent nausea and vomiting.
What if I forget to take a dose of Actos?
Take the missed dose of Actos as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.
How do I store Actos?
Do not store Actos in the bathroom, as light and moisture can negatively affect it. Keep it at room temperature, out of reach of any children or pets in your home. If you have tablets that have expired or that you no longer need and aren’t sure how to dispose of them, talk to your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Actos?
Overdosing on the Actos drug may be dangerous. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away.
Warnings
You may experience high or low blood sugar when you first start using Actos. Because very high or very low blood pressure can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision, you should avoid driving and operating heavy machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Drink alcohol only in moderation, as alcohol consumption increases your risk for low blood sugar. Let your doctor know if you will be undergoing surgery or if you experience a great deal of physical stress, as your Actos dosage may need to be adjusted. If you are a woman of childbearing age, the Actos medicine may promote ovulation, increasing your chances of becoming pregnant. Talk to your doctor about effective methods of birth control.
