Amaryl Information:
What is Amaryl?
Amaryl is a medicine that, when taken together with a healthy diet and exercise, helps treat type 2 diabetes. It can be used in conjunction with other diabetes medicines such as insulin to minimize treatment time and maximize effectiveness. Amaryl helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, but levels must still be monitored when exercising or eating.
How do I take Amaryl?
Take Amaryl with the first main meal of the day. Most patients begin with a dose of 1-2 mg daily, depending on their risk for hypoglycemia. Those with minimal or no risk can begin at 2 mg daily, but high risk patients must start at 1 mg and increase slowly based on glycemic response.
Before taking Amaryl, tell your doctor if you:
- Have liver or kidney disease
- Suffer from heart disease
- Have a sulfa drug allergy
- Have a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD) enzyme deficiency
- Regularly experience pituitary gland or adrenal gland problems
- Are undernourished
- Are pregnant or may become pregnant
- Are nursing
- Are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
What are the possible side effects of taking Amaryl?
Use of Amaryl is commonly associated with mild headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, or other flu-like symptoms. If more serious side effects occur, such as pale or yellowed skin, darkened urine, fever, confusion, or weakness, or you experience a serious skin reaction that causes facial swelling, burning in the eyes, skin sensitivity or pain, discolored rash, fever, or sore throat, contact a medical professional immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of Amaryl?
Take the dose that you missed as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the dose that you missed. Do not take extra Amaryl to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Amaryl?
Keep Amaryl stored at room temperature and as far away as possible from heat and moisture. Make sure that the container lid is closed tightly when not taking medication.
What happens if I overdose on Amaryl?
Call the Poison Control line at 1-800-222-1222 or seek medical help if you believe you have overdosed. An Amaryl overdose can trigger hypoglycemia, which can be life-threatening. Severe hypoglycemia is recognizable by extreme weakness, tremors, sweating, confusion, increased heart rate, temporary aphasia, increase in breathing rate, nausea, vomiting, fainting, and seizures or convulsions.
Warnings
If you have reached a state of diabetic ketoacidosis, do not use Amaryl as a medicine to treat it. You will need insulin treatment from your doctor. Do not let your blood sugar get too low while using Amaryl. Blood sugar can lower to dangerous levels after skipping a meal, exercising for too long, drinking alcohol, or undergoing high stress. Keep glucose tablets or high-sugar foods nearby and educate family and friends on what to do in the event of an emergency.
