Novolog Information:

What is Novolog?

Novolog is a manmade, fast-acting form of insulin that lowers blood glucose levels and is used to treat people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, a condition whereby a person’s body does not properly use insulin. Novolog works by replacing the insulin normally produced by the body in order to move sugar from the blood into other tissues in the body; it also controls sugar production in the liver. For those who do not have a Novolog copay card or a discount card, download a reusable Novolog coupon from the HelpRx website to take advantage of the savings it provides.

How do I take Novolog?

Novolog is an injectable medication in solution form; it can be self-injected into muscle tissue (thighs, upper arm, stomach, or buttocks) or administered intravenously by a healthcare professional. Novolog comes in dosing pens, cartridges, and vials. Other supplies (needles, syringes, pens) may be needed for administration. Novolog is injected ten to fifteen minutes before or after a meal, and is usually used in conjunction with another insulin as well as changes to diet and exercise. Ask your doctor for Novolog patient assistance concerning how frequently your blood sugar level needs to be checked.

Before taking Novolog, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to insulin aspart or any of the other ingredients in Novolog
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, diuretics, cold or asthma medications, or medications to lower cholesterol
  • You are taking clonidine, danazol, digoxin, or disopyramide
  • You are taking fluoxetine, reserpine, somatropin, isoniazid, or sulfa antibiotics
  • You are taking medications for mental illness
  • You are taking lithium, hormone replacements, or MAOIs
  • You are taking nausea medications
  • You are taking oral steroids, oral diabetes medication(s), oral contraceptives, thyroid medications, or pain relievers containing salicylates
  • You have, or have had, heart failure, heart kidney, or liver disease
  • You have nerve damage caused by diabetes

What are the possible side effects of taking Novolog?

The insulin in Novolog can cause side effects. Less severe symptoms include swelling, redness, or itching at the injection site, changes in skin texture or density, weight gain, or constipation. However, if any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor for Novolog patient assistance.

Severe side requiring immediate medical attention include symptoms of hypoglycemia, tachycardia, sudden and excessive weight gain, arrhythmia, blurred vision, weakness, muscle cramps, and signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the extremities, face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, wheezing, itching, rash, or shortness of breath).

What if I forget to take a dose of Novolog?

Novolog should be injected within five to ten minutes of a meal. If some time has elapsed before you remember to take a dose, contact your physician for instructions. Do not increase the quantity of the medication to compensate for the missed dose.

How do I store Novolog?

Keep Novolog in its original container, out of the reach of children. Unopened pens, cartridges, and vials need to be refrigerated; do not allow them to freeze. If refrigeration is not available, store Novolog at room temperature but do not expose it to sunlight or high temperatures (98°F or higher). Once a pen, cartridge, or vial is in use, store it at room temperature for no longer than 28 days. Dispose of any items that are expired or that have been frozen, exposed to extreme heat, or otherwise compromised according to the instructions of your pharmacist; dispose of used needles and syringes according to local regulations.

What happens if I overdose on Novolog?

An overdose of Novolog can be deadly; contact Emergency Services at 911 immediately if an overdose is suspected. Symptoms of an overdose include trouble speaking, blurred vision, extreme fatigue or weakness, seizures, confusion, tremors, stomach pain, or coma.

Warnings

Do not take Novolog if you show signs of hypo- or hyperglycemia. Do not alter your diet or exercise regimen while taking this medication. Do not change the method of administration without consulting your doctor. Alcohol may affect blood sugar levels.
