Victoza Information:

What is Victoza?

Victoza is an antidiabetic, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist that is used to help control blood sugar in those with Type 2 diabetes. It assists the pancreas in releasing correct levels of insulin when blood sugar levels are too high. However, it cannot be used to treat Type 1 diabetes. It is available only by prescription, and it can be used in combination with other oral diabetes medications. Because the costs of this medication can be quite high, take advantage of the Victoza savings card we offer for significant price reductions.

How do I take Victoza?

Victoza is delivered only by injection through a self-contained “pen,” usually once a day. To develop a proper routine, it should be administered at the same time every day. Your healthcare professional will instruct you in the proper method for configuring the pen and injecting Victoza. If you do not fully understand the procedure, ask your doctor for further Victoza patient assistance. Needles will need to be purchased separately.

Before taking Victoza, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to liraglutide or any ingredients found in Victoza
  • You are allergic to any medications
  • You are taking any medications (both prescription and non-prescription), including vitamins and supplements
  • You are taking insulin or any oral medications to treat diabetes, sulfonylureas in particular
  • You are pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You have, or have had, pancreatitis
  • You have, or have had, digestive problems including gastroparesis or severe stomach problems
  • You have high blood triglycerides
  • You have, or have had, liver or kidney disease, or gallstones

What are the possible side effects of taking Victoza?

Patients taking Victoza have reported side effects, some more severe than others. Less severe Victoza side effects include rash or redness at injection site; gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and heartburn; sneezing or runny nose; coughing; headache; and pain, burning, or other difficulties while urinating. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your physician immediately.

Severe Victoza side effects requiring immediate medical attention include vomiting; signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, tongue, face, mouth or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing); continuous pain beginning in the middle or upper left of the stomach and radiating to the back; bladder pain; cloudy or bloody urine; fever; or joint pain. If you experience any additional symptoms or conditions you believe are related to your prescription, contact your doctor for additional Victoza patient assistance.

What if I forget to take a dose of Victoza?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Victoza, take it as soon as your remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next injection, skip the missed dose, and resume the normal dosing schedule. Speak with your doctor about the minimum time allowable to take a missed dose. Do not take multiple dose of this medication to make up for a missed one.

How do I store Victoza?

Store Victoza in its original container, well out of the reach of children. Unused pens should be kept in the refrigerator at temperatures between 36°F to 46°F, but not near the cooling element. Once you have begun using a pen, store it either in the refrigerator or at room temperature out of the light and heat (not above 86°F). When travelling, keep the Victoza pen(s) at temperatures between 59°F to 86°F. Do not allow this medication to freeze. Do not use the medication if it has been frozen or exposed to temperatures exceeding 86°F. Once a pen is in use, dispose of it after 30 days, even if there is medication remaining. Dispose of the medication and used needles according to the recommendations of your pharmacist and local regulations.

What happens if I overdose on Victoza?

If an overdose of Victoza is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the person has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, call Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include severe nausea or vomiting,
