What is Januvia?

Januvia, or sitagliptin, is classified as a gliptin or DDP-4 inhibitor drug. Januvia increases insulin production and reduces blood glucose levels in those with type 2 diabetes. Gliptins work by blocking the production of the enzyme DDP-4 in the body. One of the functions of the DDP-4 enzyme is to break down incretins. Incretins cause beta cells to release insulin in the body after eating. Possible side effects from taking Januvia include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, upset stomach, decreased urination, and an inflamed pancreas. Januvia may cause pancreatitis. An increased risk of pancreatic cancer is currently being studied. Signs of pancreatitis include severe pain in the upper-left abdomen that can sometimes spread through the back, nausea, and vomiting that gets more severe after eating.
