Afrezza Information:
What is Afrezza?
Afrezza is a manufactured, short-acting form of inhalable human insulin that is prescribed, along with other insulin medications and treatment procedures, for those with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Afrezza works by moving sugar from the blood to body tissue, stopping the liver from producing sugar, and replacing the insulin the body should be producing normally. It is not used to treat diabetic ketoacidosis.
How do I take Afrezza?
Afrezza is an inhalable insulin in powder form that is administered using a specialized inhaler. Although the medication is usually taken before a meal, the frequency of dosage depends on the patient’s medical profile and the condition being treated. Your doctor may also need to adjust any other diabetes medications you are taking. Your doctor will review the proper procedure for using Afrezza and its delivery system with you; review the instructions that accompany the medication and inhaler prior to its initial use. This medication does not cure diabetes; continue to use it even if you feel well.
Before taking Afrezza, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to insulin or any of the ingredients in Afrezza;
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child;
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements;
- You are taking ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, angiotensin II antagonists; diuretics, HIV protease inhibitors, MAOIs, oral contraceptives, medications for head colds, mental illness, nausea, or asthma, oral steroids, oral diabetes medications or other inhaled medications, NSAIDs (particularly aspirin), sulfa antibiotics, thyroid medication, or are undergoing hormone replacement therapy;
- You are taking albuterol, clonidine, clozapine, danazol, disopyramide, fenofibrate, fluoxetine, gemfibrozil, isoniazid, lithium, niacin, octreotide, olanzapine, pentamidine, pentoxifylline, pramlintide, propoxyphene, reserpine, somatropin, or terbutaline;
- You have, or have had, signs of an infection within the past six months, symptoms of hypoglycemia, or you smoke;
- You have, or have had, heart disease, lung cancer, liver disease, nerve damage from diabetes, or kidney disease.
What are the possible side effects of taking Afrezza?
Some individuals have reported side effects after inhaling Afrezza. Mild symptoms include cough, diarrhea, headache, nausea, pain or burning during urination, irritated or sore throat, fatigue, or weight gain. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include tachycardia, signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), disorientation, dizziness, extreme drowsiness, swelling of the extremities, sudden weight gain, or sweating.
What if I forget to take a dose of Afrezza?
If you forget to take a scheduled dose of Afrezza, contact your physician for instructions.
How do I store Afrezza?
Keep Afrezza tightly sealed in its original container and store it in the refrigerator. Do not allow it to freeze. Keep it out of the reach of children. When the time comes for a dose, allow ten minutes for Afrezza to reach room temperature. Inhalers should be disposed of and replaced after fifteen days from the first use; do not wash the inhaler. Discuss proper disposal procedures for expired or unused doses and inhalers with your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Afrezza?
If an overdose of Afrezza is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual shows signs of hypoglycemia, has stopped breathing, lost consciousness, or is having a seizure, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Afrezza may increase the risk of lung cancer. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Afrezza may cause hypoglycemia or induce drowsiness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Do not open, chew, or swallow the Afrezza capsule or try to inhale the powder without using the inhaler.
