Apixaban Information:
What is apixaban?
Apixaban is an anticoagulant, a type of drug that disrupts the formation of blood clots. Doctors prescribe this drug to lower the risk of stroke or blood clots in people with a heart condition called atrial fibrillation. Apixaban can also reduce the risk of blood clots in people who have recently had hip or knee replacement surgery or treat blood clots in the legs or lungs.
How do I take apixaban?
Take apixaban by mouth twice a day with or without food (unless your doctor has told you differently). Do not stop taking apixaban without the permission of your doctor; suddenly quitting this medication may increase your risk of a blood clot or stroke. If you do need to stop taking this medicine, your doctor may prescribe another drug to help keep blood clots from forming.
Before taking apixaban, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially NSAIDs
- You have an artificial heart valve
- You weigh less than 132 pounds
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have had a spinal catheter, spinal surgery, or repeated spinal taps
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking apixaban?
Monitor all apixaban drug side effects and call your doctor right away if you have bleeding that won’t stop, heavy menstrual periods, black or bloody stools, coughing with blood, red or pink urine, unusual weakness, or severe dizziness. Get emergency medical attention if you have any signs of a spinal blood clot, including weakness in your lower body, back pain, or loss of bladder and bowel control.
What if I forget to take a dose of apixaban?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, as long as it isn’t almost time for your next dose. Stick to your twice-daily schedule as closely as possible, and don’t take 2 doses at the same time.
How do I store apixaban?
Keep apixaban in a childproof container and store it at room temperature (68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). Do not store it in the bathroom, since heat and moisture can negatively affect it. If your medication has expired or you no longer need it, ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on apixaban?
Overdosing on apixaban increases your risk of dangerous bleeding. If you believe that you or someone in your home has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Warnings
Because it prevents your blood from clotting, apixaban can make it easier for you to bleed or bruise. Be careful around sharp objects (such as razors, knives, or scissors) and try to avoid activities that could cause bruising, such as contact sports. Tell your doctor if you have recently undergone a spinal tap, you have a spinal catheter, or you will be receiving an epidural. Apixaban increases your risk of developing a serious blood clot around your spinal cord, and your doctor needs to know your complete medical history to determine if this medication is safe for you.
Brand Names
Apixaban is sold under the brand name Eliquis. There are no alternative brand names for this drug. If your doctor has determined this is the best anticoagulant for your condition, make sure you’re paying the lowest cost possible: get an apixaban coupon from HelpRx.
