Pradaxa Information:
What is Pradaxa?
Pradaxa is an anticoagulant medication used to reduce risk of stroke from blood clots. This medication acts as a direct inhibitor of thrombin, an enzyme that is part of the blood clotting process. The blood clotting process begins with the activation of a cascade of chemicals after the body detects injury. This cascade results in the formation thrombin. Thrombin causes the production of a protein called fibrin that ultimately binds platelet cells together, forming blood clots. Thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms abnormally in the blood vessels. This poses a serious danger to the individual as the blood clot can break free and travel through the blood stream, possibly blocking the heart, lungs, or brain, ultimately causing a stroke. Pradaxa differs from other anticoagulants like warfarin in that it reduces the risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke by much higher percentages, and there is no need for regular blood tests or dietary restrictions.
