Eliquis Information:
What is Eliquis?
Eliquis is an anticoagulant drug and Factor Xa inhibitor that, because of its blood thinning characteristics, is prescribed to prevent blood clots and is used in treating and preventing angina, pulmonary embolisms, atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis, and to reduce the risk of stroke. It may also be prescribed after certain surgeries to prevent clotting; here may be other uses for this medication as well. A consultation with your doctor will provide the necessary Eliquis patient assistance to determine its efficacy in treating other conditions.
How do I take Eliquis?
Eliquis is a prescription oral medication in tablet form, usually taken twice a day, with or without food. It is best to take Eliquis at the same time every day in order to establish a routine. If the Eliquis drug was prescribed following knee or hip replacement surgery, take the first dose within twelve to twenty-four hours after the procedure. The duration of the prescription depends on the type of surgery. Those taking the smaller 2.5mg strength may be able to split the larger 5mg dosage in half if approved by a doctor.
Before taking Eliquis, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to the Eliquis drug or any of the ingredients in the Eliquis tablet
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins or supplements, including ketoconazole, rifampin, carbamazepine, ritonavir, clarithromycin, SSRIs, itraconazole, SNRIs (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) such as duloxetine, or milnacipran, and St, John’s wort
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or nursing a child
- You will be having surgery
- You have an artificial heart valve
- You are eighty years old or older
- You weigh 132 pounds or less
- You have, or have had, heart, kidney, or liver disease
- You have, or have had, bleeding problems or uncontrollable bleeding
What are the possible side effects of taking Eliquis?
Side effects have been reported by those who have taken Eliquis, the most severe of which are related to bleeding. However, if you experience any of the following, seek medical help immediately: signs of an allergic reaction (itching, rash or blisters, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing or swallowing; swollen or painful joints; coughing or vomiting blood; bleeding from the gums; heavy vaginal bleeding; nosebleeds; or pink, brown, or red urine.
What if I forget to take a dose of Eliquis?
Those who forget to take their scheduled dose of Eliquis should do so as soon as they remember and are able. However, if it is close to the time for the next dose, forego the one that was missed and resume the normal schedule. Do not take multiple doses of this medication to compensate for one that was missed.
How do I store Eliquis?
Keep Eliquis tightly sealed in its original container away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Eliquis?
In the event of an overdose of Eliquis, contact the Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Certain conditions that indicate a possible overdose include changes in urine color (especially red, pink, or brown), black or tarry stools, unusual bleeding or bruising, or vomiting or coughing up blood or a substance that looks like coffee grounds.
Warnings
Because the Eliquis drug prevents blood clotting, it may take longer than normal for bleeding to stop in the event of a cut or injury. Ceasing to take this medication increases the risk of stroke in those with atrial fibrillation. This medication may cause paralysis due to blood clotting in those having a spinal puncture, injection, or epidural. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication.
