Bydureon Information:

What is Bydureon?

Bydureon is used to help manage blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes, but it is not an insulin. It is in a class of drugs called GLP-1 agonists, and it works by helping the pancreas release insulin when needed and preventing the liver from making sugar when it’s not needed. It is most effective when used alongside a healthy diet and regular physical activity.

How do I take Bydureon?

The Bydureon drug is administered through an injection once a week. Your doctor or pharmacist will show you how to give yourself this injection, and you should direct questions to them if you do not understand the instructions. You will need to inject the medication under your skin, and you can use the same injection area (such as your thigh) every week, provided you use a different injection site in that area.

Before taking Bydureon, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to exenatide or any other ingredients in Bydureon
  • You have a history or family history of medullary thyroid cancer
  • You have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • You are using an insulin or any other medications
  • You have kidney problems
  • You have problems digesting food
  • You have a history of pancreatitis
  • You have a history of alcoholism
  • You have had stones in your gallbladder
  • You have high blood triglyceride levels
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Bydureon?

While many patients take the Bydureon drug without experiencing any side effects, it is important to be aware of the possible side effects. Some of the most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, irritation at the injection site, and indigestion. These side effects usually go away on their own, but if they do not, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of low blood sugar, kidney failure, allergic reactions, or injection-site reactions, or if you notice any other unusual side effects.

What if I forget to take a dose of Bydureon?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, as long as you have at least 3 days before your next scheduled injection. If there are fewer than 3 days, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the normal time. Never take 2 doses of Bydureon less than 3 days apart.

How do I store Bydureon?

Keep the Bydureon drug in your refrigerator, between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit. If need be, Bydureon can also be kept at room temperature (between 68 to 77 degrees) for up to 4 weeks. Keep Bydureon in its sealed tray until you are ready to use it, and do not use it if it is past its expiration date. If you need to dispose of your expired or unused medication, ask your pharmacist how to safely do so.

What happens if I overdose on Bydureon?

No overdoses of Bydureon have been reported, so the effects are not known. However, if an overdose is suspected, you should still contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Follow all instructions your doctor provides for your diet and exercise while you are taking this medication, and have your HbA1c checked regularly. Your doctor may need to adjust your treatment if your blood sugar increases while using this medication. Stop taking Bydureon and tell your doctor if you experience severe abdominal pain, as this may be a symptom of pancreatitis. If you have any other questions, contact your pharmacist for Bydureon patient assistance.

Brand Name

Bydureon is a brand name containing long-acting exenatide. It is similar to Byetta, which contains short-acting exenatide, but these medications should not be used at the same time. If your doctor specifically prescribes Bydureon but it is not covered by your insurance, remember that you can use a HelpRx coupon or savings card to get a Bydureon discount of up to 75%.
