Glipizide Er Information:

What is glipizide ER?

Glipizide ER (extended release) is a sulfonylurea anti-diabetic drug. It is used to treat those with type 2 diabetes that are unable to control their blood sugar levels with diet and exercise alone. Glipizide may work when other sulfonylureas do not, and it may be combined with another diabetes medication. Glipizide works like other sulfonylureas by blocking potassium channels in the beta cells of the pancreas. This results in an increased release of calcium which stimulates more insulin release from each beta cell. Glipizide ER additionally increases the insulin secretion response to a meal and causes a decrease in glucose production in the liver.

How do I take glipizide ER?

Glipizide ER comes as an extended release tablet to be taken orally 30 minutes before breakfast. This medication is usually taken once a day. If you are taking regular glipizide rather than the extended release, it may be taken more than once a day 30 minutes before meals as prescribed by your doctor. Do not crush, chew or break the extended release tablets as this could cause an excessive dose of the medication. Monitor your blood sugar often and beware of the signs of hyper and hypoglycemia. Your dosage requirements may change over time. Follow a diet and exercise plan as recommended by your doctor or nutritionist while taking glipizide.

Before taking glipizide ER, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to glipizide or any of the other ingredients in this medication.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, especially blood thinners, NSAIDs, beta blockers, hormone replacement therapy, hormonal contraceptives, other diabetes medications, pain relievers, antibiotics, calcium channel blockers, thyroid medications, cold or asthma medications, and medications for mental illness.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • You have kidney, liver, or heart disease.
  • You have ever had G6PD deficiency, hormone disorders, short bowel syndrome, or intestinal narrowing or blockages.
  • You have chronic diarrhea.
  • You have diabetic ketoacidosis.

What are the possible side effects of taking glipizide ER?

Glipizide and other sulfonylureas can sometimes cause hypoglycemia or extremely low blood sugar levels. Learn to recognize the signs of hypoglycemia and carry sugar or glucose tablets with you in case of an emergency. Other side effects from taking glipizide include diarrhea, constipation, slight nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness. Less common and serious side effects include easily bruising or bleeding, stomach pain, severe nausea, pale skin, jaundice, dark urine, clay-colored stools, vomiting, accelerated heartbeat, sweating, loss of appetite, and pounding headache. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these serious side effects.

What if I forget to take a dose of glipizide ER?

Talk to your doctor about what to do if you miss a dose of glipizide. Keep these instructions for future reference. If you forgot to take a dose of glipizide, take it as soon as you remember and monitor your blood sugar levels. If it’s almost time for your next dose, take the next dose but do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How do I store glipizide ER?

Store glipizide ER tightly closed in its original container in a dry place at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from moisture and humidity.

What happens if I overdose on glipizide ER?

Signs of overdose on glipizide may include hypoglycemia, shaking, rapid heart rate, seizures, sweating and loss of consciousness. If you think you have overdosed on glipizide, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If you suspect someone has overdosed on glipizide and they are unconscious, call 911.
