What is glipizide ER?

Glipizide ER (extended release) is a sulfonylurea anti-diabetic drug. It is used to treat those with type 2 diabetes that are unable to control their blood sugar levels with diet and exercise alone. Glipizide may work when other sulfonylureas do not, and it may be combined with another diabetes medication. Glipizide works like other sulfonylureas by blocking potassium channels in the beta cells of the pancreas. This results in an increased release of calcium which stimulates more insulin release from each beta cell. Glipizide ER additionally increases the insulin secretion response to a meal and causes a decrease in glucose production in the liver.

How do I take glipizide ER?

Glipizide ER comes as an extended release tablet to be taken orally 30 minutes before breakfast. This medication is usually taken once a day. If you are taking regular glipizide rather than the extended release, it may be taken more than once a day 30 minutes before meals as prescribed by your doctor. Do not crush, chew or break the extended release tablets as this could cause an excessive dose of the medication. Monitor your blood sugar often and beware of the signs of hyper and hypoglycemia.
