What is Glyburide?

 

Glyburide is a generic drug that comes in tablet form, and it is used to treat type 2 diabetes.

It is typically prescribed along with a healthy diet and exercise regiment, and it is sometimes used in combination with other medications.

 

Glyburide is in a class of medications called sulfonylureas and it lowers blood sugar by causing the pancreas to produce insulin and promoting more efficient use of insulin in the body. helping the body use insulin efficiently. This medication will only help patients whose bodies naturally produce insulin. This medication should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes, in which the body does not produce insulin.

How do I use Glyburide?

 

Glyburide tablets are to be taken orally, and this drug is typically prescribed to be taken 1 or 2 times per day.

 

Before using Glyburide, tell your doctor if:

 
  • you are allergic to Glyburide or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or nutritional or herbal supplements

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

  • you are taking bosentan (Tracleer)

  • you have or have ever had G6PD deficiency

  • you have hormone disorders involving the adrenal, pituitary, or thyroid gland

  • you have heart, liver, or kidney disease

 

Additional precautions:

 
  • Alcohol can make the side effects from glyburide worse. Consuming alcohol while taking glyburide also rarely may cause symptoms such as flushing (reddening of the face), headache, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, weakness, blurred vision, mental confusion, sweating, choking, breathing difficulty, and anxiety.

  • This drug may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight if possible. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and protective clothing if you will be exposed to sunlight for a prolonged amount of time.

  • Be sure to follow all dietary recommendations made by your doctor and to lose weight if necessary. It is important to follow a healthy diet and an exercise regimen and maintain an overall healthy lifestyle to help to control your blood sugar levels.

 

 

What are the possible side effects of using Glyburide?

 

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

  • nausea

  • upper abdominal fullness

  • heartburn

  • rash

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • yellowing of the skin or eyes

  • light-colored stools

  • dark urine

  • pain in the upper right part of the stomach

  • unusual bruising or bleeding

  • diarrhea

  • fever

  • sore throat

  • swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, or throat

 

What if I forget to use a dose of Glyburide?

 

Take your missed dose of Glyburide as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How do I store Glyburide?

 

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

What happens if I overdose on Glyburide?

 

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

 

Symptoms of overdose on Glyburide may include:

 
  • loss of consciousness

  • seizure

Is Glyburide a Brand or Generic drug?

 
Generlac is a brand drug, and the Generlac generic is Lactulose. Other similar brand name drugs include Cholac, Constilac Syrup, Constulose, and Enulose. These drugs are not all the same, so consult with your doctor to determine which treatment is best for you.
