What is Glyxambi?
Glyxambi is a combination of two drugs, empagliflozin and linagliptin, prescribed to help control blood sugar levels in those with Type 2 diabetes; it is not used to treat Type 1 diabetes. Empagliflozin works by assisting the kidneys in eliminating glucose from the bloodstream; the role of linagliptin is to regulate insulin levels in the body after eating. Glyxambi is frequently prescribed along with changes to diet and exercise patterns.
How do I take Glyxambi?
Glyxambi is administered in tablet form that is taken orally, usually once a day, with water; taking it with food is optional. Follow the dosing instructions that accompany the prescription. Your doctor may recommend a diet and exercise program in conjunction with the medication.
Before taking Glyxambi, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to linagliptin, empagliflozin, or any of the ingredients in Glyxambi;

- You are taking carbamazepine, diuretics, glimepiride, phenytoin, nateglinide, oral medications for diabetes, phenobarbital, glipizide, insulin, glyburide, repaglinide, pioglitazone, tolazamide, rosiglitazone, ritonavir, tolazamide, rifampin, tolbutamide, tolbutamide, or rifabutin.
- You have, or have had pancreatitis, kidney or liver disease, gallstones, diabetes, high triglyceride levels, hypotension, urination problems or urinary tract diseases, genital infections, including yeast infections;
- You have not been circumcised;
- You are on a low sodium diet, of if you drink alcohol; or
- You are undergoing dialysis.
What are the possible side effects of taking Glyxambi?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Glyxambi. Less severe symptoms include headache, joint pain, and increased thirst. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare professional.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing; hoarseness; flu-like symptoms including fever); red, swollen or itching penis, pain in penile skin, strong smelling penile discharge, penile rash; vaginal itching, yellow or white vaginal discharge, strong vaginal odor; stomach pain, nausea, vomiting; dry mouth, unusual fatigue, breath having a fruit odor; confusion, urine that is cloudy or burning, painful, or increased urination; appetite loss; pain in the pelvis or back; pain in the upper left or middle of the stomach but may spread to the back.
What if I forget to take a dose of Glyxambi?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Glyxambi, do so as soon as your remember. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, though, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Glyxambi?
Keep Glyxambi tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Glyxambi?
If it is believed an individual has overdosed on Glyxambi, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include symptoms of hypoglycemia (confusion, extreme and sudden weakness, fainting, tachycardia, fast heart rate, nausea, rapid breathing, seizure, sweating, tremors, speech difficulties, and vomiting).
Warnings
Glyxambi may cause orthostatic hypotension; do not drive, operate heavy equipment or machinery, or handle firearms until its effects are known. An overdose of Glyxambi may cause hypoglycemia. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Contact your doctor if you become ill, develop a fever or an infection, are injured, or are experience unusual levels of stress. Be sure to adhere to the exercise and diet regimen your doctor recommends. Patients should wear a diabetes alert bracelet while taking this medication.
