Humulin N Information:
What is Humulin N?
Humulin N is insulin isophane, a manufactured form of this hormone that is administered for treating Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes; it works by lowering blood glucose levels. Humulin N is administered using either a self-contained, premeasured injectable pen or is drawn from vials into an injection device. Humulin N begins working faster and lasts longer than Humulin R.
How do I take Humulin N?
Humulin N will come with a detailed set of instructions for injecting the medication. Follow them exactly. Ask your healthcare professional for assistance if you have never used this type of injection device. Humulin N is injected subcutaneously into the thigh, stomach, or upper arm. Change the injection site with each dose. Do not share the injection device with anyone.
Before taking Humulin N, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to insulin or any of the ingredients in the Humulin N formula;
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child;
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins or supplements;
- You are taking alpha blockers; beta blockers, diuretics, ACE inhibitors, MAOIs, antidepressants or oral hormonal contraceptives;
- You are taking oral medication for diabetes, or thyroid medications;
- You are taking asthma or cold medication, oral steroids, sulfa antibiotics, or salicylate pain relievers;
- You are taking asparaginase, diazoxide, quinine; or quinidine.
- You have, or have had, hypertension, heart disease, heart failure, or diabetic nerve damage;
- You have, or have had, thyroid, kidney, liver, adrenal, or pituitary disease; or
- You drink alcohol.
What are the possible side effects of taking Humulin N?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Humulin N. Less severe symptoms include constipation, fat build-up or breakdown under the skin, or irritation, soreness, or redness at the injection site. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include tachycardia or arrhythmia, signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fever, hoarseness), dizziness, blurred vision, sudden weight gain in a short period, muscle cramps, shortness of breath or wheezing, sweating, swelling of the limbs or extremities, or weakness.
What if I forget to take a dose of Humulin N?
If you are using insulin for the first time, discuss the procedure for a missed dose with your doctor; write the instructions down and keep them in an accessible location. It is recommended that you keep a Humulin N kwikpen with you at all times.
How do I store Humulin N?
Keep unopened vials and Humulin N kwikpens under refrigeration and out of the reach of children. Do not allow the insulin to freeze nor use insulin that has been frozen; do not use this medication if it is cloudy or it contains particulate matter. Humulin N kwikpens that have been opened should be stored at room temperatures of less than 86°F; opened vials may be kept under refrigeration or stored at room temperatures of less than 86°F. Dispose of any unused or expired doses or quantities according to the instructions of a pharmacist. Vials that aren’t refrigerated should be disposed of after 31 days. Pens that aren’t refrigerated should be disposed of after 14 days.
