What is Invokamet?
Invokamet is a proprietary combination of the diabetes medications canagliflozin and metformin, and is prescribed for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, along with exercise and dietary adjustments. Canagliflozin helps the kidneys eliminate glucose from the blood, while metformin lowers glucose production in the liver while at the same time preventing the intestines from absorbing excessive levels of glucose. It is not prescribed for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes.
How do I take Invokamet?
Invokamet is administered in tablet form, taken orally, twice a day, with food. Vitamin B12 may be prescribed in conjunction with this medication; take only what was prescribed. Blood sugar levels will need to be monitored while taking this drug. Invokamet does not cure Type 2 diabetes; continue to take it even if you are feeling well.
Before taking Invokamet, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to canagliflozin, metformin, or any of the ingredients in Invokamet
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing
- You are in a state of ketoacidosis or lactic acidosis
- You have, or have had, kidney disease, liver disease, or low blood pressure, or hypertension
- You have, or have had, heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke, or heart attack
- You have, or have had, a genital yeast infection, or have not been circumcised (males)
- You are taking ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, diuretics, calcium channel blockers, beta blockers, other diabetes medications including insulin, oral contraceptives, cold or asthma medication, oral steroids, hormone replacement therapy, medications for nausea, or medications for mental illness or thyroid disease
- You are taking rifampin, acetazolamide, ritonavir, morphine, digoxin, phenobarbital, amiloride, phenytoin, cimetidine, niacin, furosemide, isoniazid, procainamide, zonisamide, quinidine, topiramate, quinine, ranitidine, triamterene, trimethoprim, or vancomycin
- You will need to fast prior to a pending surgery
- You have an electrolyte imbalance or are on a low sodium diet
- You will be having a CT-scan or x-ray requiring use of an injectable dye
What are the possible side effects of taking Invokamet?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Invokamet. Less severe side effects include increased urination, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flushing, gas or indigestion, headaches, heartburn, increased thirst, muscle pain, changes to nails, stomach pain, or an unpleasant metallic taste. If these conditions persist, worsen, or appear only after taking Invokamet after a period of time, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction; red, itching, or swollen penis, penile discharge with a foul odor, or pain in penile skin; vaginal odor, white or yellow vaginal discharge, or vaginal itching (yeast infection); chest pain; cold, gray skin; confusion; painful or urgent urination, or change in urine odor, color, or texture; changes to heart rate; malaise; changes in muscle tone; rectal or pelvic pain; tingling, weakness, or heaviness in the arms or legs.
What if I forget to take a dose of Invokamet?
If you miss your scheduled dose of Invokamet, take it as soon as you remember and are able to do so with food. If the time is near for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the return to the regular routine. Do not take multiple tablets or change the dosing regimen to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Invokamet?
Keep Invokamet tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the instructions of a pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Invokamet?
If an overdose of Invokamet is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or fallen unconscious, call Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include hypoglycemia, abnormal heart rate, loss of appetite, deep, rapid breathing or shortness of breath, a general feeling of discomfort, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, sudden and excessive fatigue, chills, flushing, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, general weakness.
Warnings
Invokamet may contribute to the development of ketoacidosis or lactic acidosis. Alcohol may inhibit the effectiveness of this medication and contribute to the developing lactic acidosis. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Invokamet. This drug combination may affect the results of urine tests. This medication may cause the development of non-cancerous uterine polyps.
