Nateglinide Information:
What is nateglinide?
Nateglinide is a prescription drug that causes the body to produce more insulin, the natural hormone that lets the body convert sugar to an energy source. This medication may be prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes to help them control their blood sugar levels, which will reduce their risk for kidney damage, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and other diabetes complications. It is most effective when used with a healthy diet and regular exercise. It should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the body can’t produce insulin.
How do I take nateglinide?
Take nateglinide by mouth three times a day, about half an hour before every meal (unless your doctor gives you different instructions). If you miss a meal, skip the accompanying dose of nateglinide. You and your doctor will need to check your blood sugar regularly in order to make sure your current dose of nateglinide is effective.
Before taking nateglinide, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have type 1 diabetes
- You are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis
- You have gout
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking nateglinide?
Some people experience weight gain when they start taking nateglinide. Other possible side effects include dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, back pain, or joint pain. If you have any side effects that last a long time or become severe, contact your doctor. Because the nateglinide drug can cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels, make sure you know the signs of both high and low blood sugar.
What if I forget to take a dose of nateglinide?
If you remember the missed dose before you eat a meal, go ahead and take it. If you are not preparing to eat a full meal when you remember, skip the missed dose and take your next nateglinide dose about half an hour before your next meal.
How do I store nateglinide?
Keep nateglinide in a tightly-sealed container at room temperature (ideally around 77 degrees Fahrenheit). Do not store this medicine in the bathroom, since heat and humidity from the shower can negatively affect it. As with all prescription drugs, keep it away from pets and children. If you no longer need this medication and are unsure how to properly dispose of it, consult your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on nateglinide?
Overdosing on the nateglinide drug may lead to agitation, rapid heart rate, vision changes, excessive sweating, fainting, or seizures. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, get emergency medical attention right away.
Warnings
Nateglinide may cause your blood sugar levels to drop too low, so make sure to always carry a quick source of sugar, such as hard candy or fruit juice. Limit your alcohol consumption, since alcohol can also cause your blood sugar to drop. Let your doctor know if you experience signs of high or low blood sugar while taking this medication, as you may need to have your dosage adjusted. Be careful driving and performing other activities that require alertness until you know how nateglinide affects you; this medication can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision.
Brand Names
Nateglinide is the generic version of Starlix. It is usually less expensive than its brand name equivalent, but it can still cost a lot if your insurance doesn’t cover it. Remember to get a HelpRx nateglinide coupon to reduce your out-of-pocket expense by up to 75%.
