Nesina Information:
What is Nesina?
Nesina is the brand name of the anti-diabetic drug alogliptin, and is used to help control blood sugar levels in those with Type 2 diabetes. It is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that regulates the amount of insulin in the blood stream. It is not for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes.
How do I take Nesina?
Nesina is dispensed in tablet form and administered orally once a day; it may be taken with or without food. Take this medication exactly as directed and if you have any questions, consult your doctor. While this medication controls Type 2 diabetes, it is not a cure; continue taking the Nesina drug even if you feel well.
Before taking Nesina, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to alogliptin or any of the ingredients in Nesina
- You are allergic to DPP-4 inhibitors
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You drink, and the amounts you typically consume
- You have, or have had, gallstones, kidney or liver disease, or pancreatitis
- You are taking other diabetes medication
What are the possible side effects of taking Nesina?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Nesina. Less severe side effects include a sore throat, headache, or runny nose. However, if any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare professional immediately.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, blisters, fever, itching, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing), changes to urine color, fatigue, hoarseness, symptoms of jaundice, changes in appetite, sever pain in the upper right stomach area, stomach pain that moves to the back, or vomiting.
What if I forget to take a dose of Nesina?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of the Nesina drug, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the normal routine. Do not take multiple doses to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Nesina?
Keep Nesina tightly stored in its original container, out of the reach of children, and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Nesina?
If an overdose of Nesina is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
