Prandin Information:

What is Prandin?

Prandin is a glinide drug sometimes prescribed for type 2 diabetes. It works by causing the body to produce more insulin, which helps to control blood sugar levels by converting glucose to an energy source. It is most effective when used alongside a doctor-approved diet and exercise plan. It should not be used for type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the body is unable to produce insulin.

How do I take Prandin?

Take your Prandin dose about 15 minutes before each meal, unless your doctor has given you different instructions. If you skip one of your normal meals, skip the corresponding Prandin dose as well. Check your blood sugar regularly to make sure this medication is working correctly.

Before taking Prandin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or have any other allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs or supplements, especially metformin or other diabetes drugs
  • You have type 1 diabetes
  • You are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis
  • You have kidney or liver disease
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Prandin?

Serious side effects of the Prandin drug are rare, but some people experience joint pain, diarrhea, constipation, or cold-like symptoms when taking this medication. Let your doctor know if you have any side effects that last a long time or become severe.  Contact your doctor immediately if you have severe upper stomach pain, fever, jaundice, dark urine, or a red or purple skin rash.

What if I forget to take a dose of Prandin?

If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose before your next meal. Do not take a dose more than 30 minutes before you plan to eat.

How do I store Prandin?

Store your Prandin medicine in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. Do not keep it in the bathroom, where heat and moisture could negatively affect it. As with all prescription drugs, keep it out of reach of pets and children, and dispose of it properly if you no longer need it. If you don’t know how to safely dispose of this drug, consult your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Prandin?

Overdosing on Prandin can be dangerous and may lead to a rapid heart rate, excessive sweating, agitation, vision changes, fainting, or seizures. If you suspect that you or someone in your household has overdosed, get medical attention right away.

Warnings

Prandin can cause blood sugar fluctuations, so make sure you know the signs of high and low blood sugar. Carry a quick source of sugar, such as fruit juice or hard candy, with you at all times in case you blood sugar drops too low. Don’t drink alcohol, since alcohol can cause your blood sugar to drop dangerously low.  Be careful driving and performing other tasks that require alertness until you know how Prandin affects you.

Brand Names

Prandin is a brand name drug. Its generic equivalent is called repaglinide. The generic version is typically less expensive, so ask your doctor if it’s possible to switch. You can use a HelpRx coupon or discount card for Prandin or repaglinide.
