Welchol Information:
What is Welchol?
Welchol, or colesevelam in its generic form, is a bile acid sequestrant medication that is used to reduce high LDL levels in adults with hyperlipidemia. It may be taken alone or along with another cholesterol medication such as a statin. Welchol works differently from statins that work in the liver. Welchol works by blocking the reabsorption of bile acids into the intestine which eventually causes it to deplete. This causes the body to use cholesterol to make more bile. This need for more cholesterol causes the liver to process more LDL cholesterol from the blood.
