Climara Information:

What is Climara?

Climara is a brand name for estradiol (an estrogen) delivered through a transdermal patch. It is prescribed to treat certain symptoms of menopause (hot flashes, or vaginal irritation, burning, and drying). It may also be prescribed to treat ovarian disorders or osteoporosis.

How do I take Climara?

Climara delivers its drug by means of a transdermal patch that is applied once or twice a week, depending on the prescription. Follow the dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor. The schedule for wearing the patch depends on the patient’s profile and need. Apply the patch to a clean, dry area of the stomach or buttocks; site rotation is recommended. Do not apply the patch to the breasts or to skin that is irritated. If the patch falls off, try re-adhering it. If that does not work, apply a new patch to a different area and leave it in place until it is time for the next scheduled patch.

Before taking Climara, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to estradiol, any estrogen products, or the adhesive in the Climara patch
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are using any other form of hormone-based birth control or other medications containing estrogen
  • You are taking medications to treat HIV/AIDS, or thyroid disease
  • You are taking troleandomycin, antifungals, phenobarbital, aprepitant, verapamil, dexamethasone, carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampin, cimetidine, zafirlukast, clarithromycin, amiodarone, diltiazem, griseofulvin, erythromycin, fluoxetine, lovastatin, efavirenz, indinavir, nelfinavir, lopinavir, nevirapine, ritonavir, fluvoxamine, saquinavir, nefazodone, rifabutin, cyclosporine, or sertraline
  • You have, or have had, low or high blood calcium levels, jaundice, uterine fibroids, porphyria, endometriosis, migraines, seizures, or asthma
  • You have, or have had, a disease of the liver, gallbladder, kidney, pancreas, or thyroid

What are the possible side effects of taking Climara?

Some individuals have reported side effects after using the Climara patch. Less severe side effects include anxiety, pain in the back, neck, or muscles, breast tenderness or pain, change in sexual desire, altered moods, constipation, cough, darkening of facial tissue, depression, difficulty wearing contact lenses, gas, hair loss, headache, heartburn, nausea, painful menstruation, redness or irritation at the application site, runny nose or congestion, vaginal discharge, burning, swelling, irritation, redness, or itching, unwanted hair growth, vomiting, or weight gain or loss. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue), bulging eyes, fever, hoarseness, joint pain, diminished appetite, loss of coordination, blisters or other skin changes, pain, tenderness, or swelling of the stomach, or signs of jaundice.

What if I forget to take a dose of Climara?

If you forget to apply your patch of the Climara drug, do so as soon as you remember and are able, then apply the next patch at its scheduled time. Do not apply multiple patches to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store Climara?

Keep Climara sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Speak with your pharmacist about the proper disposal for any unused or expired patches.

What happens if I overdose on Climara?

If an overdose of Climara is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include vaginal bleeding, vomiting, and nausea.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using the Climara patch. The Climara drug increases the risk of gallbladder disease or ovarian cancer. This medication may slow or stop the growth of children to whom it is prescribed. Ask about eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using Climara. Remove the patch if having an MRI.
