Prempro Information:

What is Prempro?

Prempro is a combination conjugated estrogens/medroxyprogesterone acetate tablet which is taken orally. While doctors can sometimes prescribe it for other ailments, Prempro is a hormone treatment for menopausal symptoms, namely moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes and night sweats) and vulvar and vaginal atrophy and dryness, as well as for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. A combination of estrogen and progestin, Prempro replaces these hormones when the body stops producing enough of them during menopause.

How do I take Prempro?

Buy Prempro at your local pharmacy with our Prempro coupon or discount card. Follow the instructions on your prescription label, and take Prempro exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take one pill orally once daily, and try to take it at the same time every day. You may need to take your dose during or after eating a full meal to prevent stomach upset.

Before taking Prempro, tell your doctor if:

  • You are or might be pregnant, or you are breastfeeding.
  • You’ve recently had or are going to have surgery, or will be otherwise confined to sitting or lying down, as it could increase your risk of blood clots.
  • You have hypoparathyroidism, hypothyroidism, or other thyroid problems.
  • You have a history of liver or kidney disease or dysfunction.
  • You are currently suffering from or have a history of myocardial infarction, stroke, blood clots, or other arterial thromboembolic diseases.
  • You are currently suffering from or have a history of pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis.
  • You have a history of breast or uterine cancer, or may have breast or uterine cancer.
  • You have a history of estrogen-dependent neoplasia or may have estrogen-dependent neoplasia.
  • You’re experiencing undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • You have any other significant health problems, such as migraines, obesity, asthma, seizures, mood disorders, or autoimmune diseases, etc..
  • You have any allergies, especially medication allergies.
  • You’re taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs or vitamins, especially ospemifene oral or other estrogen agonists/antagonists, as there is a high risk of dangerous interactions.

What are the possible side effects of taking Prempro?

The following are serious side effects of Prempro: confusion or problems with concentration and memory; migraines; sudden headaches, vertigo, and problems with vision or speech; sudden numbness or weakness on one side of your body; chest pains that may spread to one arm, nausea, and sweating; pain and swelling in your lower leg; swelling in your ankles, hands, or feet; jaundice; developing a breast lump or abdominal vaginal bleeding. If you experience any of these side effects, discontinue taking Prempro and talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

Minor side effects also include: changing weight or appetite, breast tenderness or swelling, mild nausea or bloating, vaginal itching or discharge, changing menstrual period, decreased sex drive, nervousness, headache or dizziness, feeling tired, acne, freckles or darkening skin (melasma), and hair growth or hair loss.

If you experience swelling in your lips, tongue or throat, have difficulty breathing, or develop hives, discontinue taking Prempro and seek medical help immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of Prempro?

You should take your next dose of Prempro as soon as you remember. However, do not take a double dose, and if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose entirely.

How do I store Prempro?

Prempro should be stored at average room temperature (i.e., between 68°F and 70°F), although it can be stored temporarily in temperatures as low as 59°F and as high as 86°F. Do not store Prempro in the bathroom, or anywhere moist. Keep away from light and heat. Always keep this medicine out of reach of children or pets.

What happens if I overdose on Prempro?

Overdose symptoms can include severe nausea and vomiting or abnormal vaginal bleeding. Call your local poison control center immediately.

Warnings

You should not smoke or use other tobacco products while taking Prempro, as it increases your risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attacks, especially in women over the age of 35. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, tanning lights, or other sunlamps, and always use sunscreen if going outdoors, as sunlight can exacerbate melasma. Eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice can exacerbate the side effects of Prempro, so talk to your doctor about whether it should be excluded from your diet.

Prempro can also cause unusual results in certain medical tests, so be sure to tell any doctor that you’re taking it.

Brand Names

Premphase is another brand name of Prempro. A generic conjugated estrogens and medroxyprogesterone is not currently available in the United States. If you’re concerned with the Prempro retail cost, we offer a Prempro coupon available electronically or to print that will save you 85%.
