What is Femring?
Estrogen levels drop when women go through menopause, leading to symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Femring, a vaginal ring containing estrogen, is used to relieve these symptoms. It is typically prescribed at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest amount of time.
How do I take Femring?
Always wash your hands before and after inserting a new ring. Use your thumb and index finger to press the sides of the ring together, then push the ring high into your vagina. For more detailed instructions on inserting your Femring, refer to the patient leaflet you should have received with your medication or contact your pharmacist.
Before taking Femring, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication or have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications
- You have experienced unusual vaginal bleeding
- You have a history or family history of breast, uterus, or ovarian cancer
- You have a history of stroke, blood clots, or blood clotting disorders
- You have high blood pressure, cholesterol, or triglyceride levels
- You have diabetes
- You have had lupus
- You have an underactive thyroid
- You have had any uterus problems
- You have asthma
- You have a history of seizures or migraine headaches
- You have a history of mental or mood disorders, such as depression
- You experience frequent vaginal infections
- You are a smoker
- You will be confined to a chair or bed for an extended period of time
What are the possible side effects of taking Femring?
Side effects of Femring may include nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, headache, bloating, or weight changes. If you have any of these side effects and they persist for a long time or begin to interfere with daily activities, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following rare but serious side effects: unexplained mood changes, unusual vaginal bleeding, increased vaginal irritation or discharge, severe abdominal pain, breast lumps, dark urine, yellowing of the skin and eyes, swelling of the hands and feet, or increased thirst and urination. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any symptoms of a stroke or toxic shock syndrome.
What if I forget to take a dose of Femring?
Since your Femring can be worn for up to 3 months, forgetting a dose should not be an issue. However, if you have been using the same ring for over 3 months, contact your doctor immediately to find out what to do.
How do I store Femring?
Keep any unopened Femring at room temperature, out of reach of pets and children. Do not remove the ring from its pouch until you are ready to use it. If you no longer need this medication and have remaining rings, contact your pharmacist to determine how to properly dispose of them.
What happens if I overdose on Femring?
You are not likely to overdose on Femring through vaginal insertion, but this medication can be harmful when swallowed. Overdosing by swallowing this medication may cause severe nausea, vomiting, or unusual vaginal bleeding. If you suspect that you or someone in your household has overdosed, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
In very rare cases, Femring can lead to toxic shock syndrome. Remove the ring and get emergency medical attention if you experience a high fever, unusual muscle pain, a sunburn-like rash, diarrhea, sudden dizziness, or fainting. Do not smoke or use tobacco products while using Femring, as this can increase your risk for blood clots and stroke. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning booths, as this medication can make you more sensitive to sunlight.
Brand Names
Femring is a brand name medication containing the estrogen hormone estradiol. It is currently only available under this brand name.
