What is Menest?

Menest is a brand name of esterified estrogens prescribed to replace estrogen in order to treat a number of conditions, including menopause deficiency in ovary functions, vaginal degeneration, hot flashes, osteoporosis, low hormone levels, breast, and urethra and prostate cancer. It is also used for hormone replacement therapy in women and for fertility treatment. 

How do I take Menest?

Menest is administered as tablet that is taken orally with water; it may be taken with milk or food to mitigate nausea. The dosage strength and frequency will be determined by the condition being treated. Follow the instructions that accompany the prescription exactly. Your doctor may adjust the dosage strength; do not take more or less than the prescribed amount. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well; do not stop taking this medication without written medical approval.

Before taking Menest, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to estrogen, estrogen products, or any of the ingredients in the Menest drug
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking antifungals, medications for thyroid disease, or medications for HIV or AIDS
  • You are taking cyclosporine, clarithromycin, cimetidine, carbamazepine, aprepitant, fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, erythromycin, diltiazem, dexamethasone, zafirlukast, verapamil, troleandomycin, sertraline, rifampin, rifabutin, phenytoin, phenobarbital, nefazodone, lovastatin, and griseofulvin
  • You have, or have had, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, high or low calcium levels, or symptoms of jaundice while pregnant or taking estrogen
  • You have, or have had, thyroid, gall bladder, pancreatic, heart, liver, or kidney disease
  • You have, or have had, seizures, asthma, porphyria, or migraines

What are the possible side effects of taking Menest?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Menest. Less severe symptoms include acne, changes in menstrual cycle; changes in skin color, decreased appetite, decreased sex drive, depression, migraine headaches, swollen or tender breasts, problems wearing contact lenses, dizziness, or water retention. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing), blood clots, a painful, tender, or red leg, dizziness, dizziness, liver damage, a breast lump, nipple discharge, sudden, severe headache, sudden, severe vomiting, speech problems, feeling faint, loss of vision, dizziness, weakness or numbness in a limb, crushing chest pain or chest heaviness, coughing up blood, sudden shortness of breath, or difficulty thinking clearly, remembering, or learning new things.

What if I forget to take a dose of Menest?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Menest, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store Menest?

Keep Menest tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Menest?

If an overdose of the Menest drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include vomiting, nausea, and, in women, breakthrough bleeding.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Menest. This drug Increases the risk of developing endometrial cancer, heart attacks, strokes, blood clots in the lungs or legs, breast cancer, and dementia.
