Estrogel Information:
What is Estrogel?
Estrogel is a topical medication that contains an estrogen hormone (estradiol). It helps treat the hot flashes caused by low estrogen levels in women going through menopause. It may also help treat certain other symptoms of menopause, such as vaginal dryness and increased or painful urination.
How do I take Estrogel?
Follow your prescription instructions very carefully—your doctor should start you with the lowest effective dose of the Estrogel drug for the shortest amount of time in order to reduce the risk of side effects. Most patients who need this drug will apply it to a small patch of skin on their upper arm once a day. After priming the gel pump, press it all the way down once to squirt a single dose of the medication onto the application site. Gently rub it in with your hands, then wash your hands thoroughly with hot water and soap. Wait at least 5 minutes before covering the application site with clothing.
Before taking Estrogel, tell your doctor if:
- You have any allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications
- You have recently experienced unusual vaginal bleeding
- You have ever had cancer, especially breast or ovarian cancer
- You have a history of heart disease, blood clots, or stroke
- You have a history of liver or kidney disease
- You have high blood pressure and/or diabetes
- You have asthma
- You have ever had seizures
- You recently had or will be having surgery
- You will be confined to a bed or chair for a long period of time
- You think you are pregnant or may become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Estrogel?
Possible side effects of the Estrogel drug include breast tenderness, headache, nausea, vomiting, and weight change. Less common but more serious side effects may include mental changes, unusual vaginal bleeding or irritation, breast lumps, stomach pain, increased thirst or urination, persistent nausea, swollen hands or feet, and dark urine. In rare cases, this drug may cause blood clots, which can lead to serious side effects including left arm pain, weakness on one side of the body, vision changes, swelling of the legs, difficulty breathing, and dizziness. If you experience any serious side effects after taking this medication, seek medical attention immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of Estrogel?
You should never double the amount of Estrogel you use to catch up. If you realize you have missed a dose and have less than 12 hours until your next dose, simply skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosing schedule. However, if you have more than 12 hours until the next dose, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember.
How do I store Estrogel?
Keep Estrogel at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and open flames. Always lock the gel pump head and cover with the cap when not using this medication. As with all prescription medications, keep Estrogel out of reach of pets and children.
What happens if I overdose on Estrogel?
An Estrogel drug overdose can lead to severe nausea, vomiting, and unusual vaginal bleeding. If you or someone in your household has swallowed or overdosed on Estrogel, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.
Warnings
Avoid smoking or using tobacco products while on Estrogel, as this can increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots, and high blood pressure. Stay out of the sun as much as possible, and wear sunscreen or protective clothing when you do go outside, as the Estrogel drug increases your likelihood of developing melisma (dark, blotchy patches of skin on the face). Wait at least 25 minutes after applying this drug to apply sunscreen to the same site. If you have children, do not let them touch the gel or its application site, as this can cause the child to accidentally absorb some of the drug and experience side effects. Always wash your hands thoroughly after using the gel to avoid exposing others to the medication.
